There are two meetings to look at on Wednesday, with Yarra Valley and Bathurst getting my focus.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Yarra Valley

Best bet: Race 3, Number 3, Foregone Conclusion
This former Kiwi finds a very winnable race to kick off life in Australia for Tim Butt. He didn’t exactly set the world on fire when racing in NZ but the form around reads far superior to anything engaged here. He trialled up well leading in and with upside to come, he’s clearly the one to beat.

Next best: Race 1, Number 4, Spotlight
Diving into a first starter, especially a trotter, is fraught with danger, but Brent Lilly is a great trainer and there is none better than Chris Alford to steer. This is a Muscle Hill three-year-old that is on debut and has trialled well leading in, winning his latest trial in solid time. I am confident he can measure up against these.

Value: Race 6, Number 2, Express Yourself
This is a genuine mare that tries hard, is safe from the stand, presses forward, and is a great each-way gamble. This horse led and took a sit at Cranbourne last time, got the sprint lane and tried hard when second to Sonny Brooke. This horse should lead this field early and from there, Chris Alford will have a few options.

Bathurst

Best bet: Race 1, Number 7, Money Honey
This horse is a former Kiwi that hasn’t set the world on fire since coming over, but this is one of the easier races she has contested and rarely do the Morris camp get it wrong when they come to Bathurst. Recent efforts in stronger races have been sound and with good gate speed, this horse should find the front and prove hard to get past.

Next best: Race 3, Number 1, Uncle Lukey
This horse is a smart colt that should take a power of beating here. He trialled up very sharply prior to resuming at Menangle. This horse was tardy to begin with, which pretty much sealed his fate, but he wasn’t too bad in defeat behind Heavenly Belle. He is back at Bathurst, he is back a fair bit in grade and depth, and he’s clearly the one to beat.

Value: Race 4, Number 1, Thirsty Sportsman
If he can hold leaders back behind likely leader and odds-on pop Miss Daytona, she’s a near good thing to run in the top three. This four-year-old hasn’t really been helped by barrier draws in two runs back from a spell, but this time lands a plum spot from the gate, leaders back, three back at worst.
