The 36-man squad will be picked by Gatland and his support staff, which includes Scotland coach Gregor Townsend. It is expected Wales skipper Alun Wyn Jones will be named captain.

The group will head to South Africa for three Tests, plus a host of other matches, in July and August. The first Test against the Springboks kicks off on July 24.

The ceremony will begin at 8:45pm (AEST), with Lions chairman Jason Leonard to reveal the team captain at 9:09pm. The rest of the team will then follow at 9:28pm.

The announcement will feature some legends of UK rugby, including Jason Robinson, Gavin Hastings and Sam Warburton. Springboks great Bryan Habana will also make an appearance via Zoom.

The tour is the Lions’ first to South Africa since 2009, a series they lost 2-1. Along with the three Tests, it includes matches against provincial sides the Bulls, Sharks and Stormers, as well as South Africa ‘A’ and an invitational team. Kicking off the tour will be a match against Japan to be played in Edinburgh on June 26. You can check out the full Lions 2021 fixture list here on The Roar.

However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic means doubts will remain around the tour throughout. While South Africa’s rate of new cases has dropped dramatically from a high of over 21,000 per day in mid-January, it remains a high-risk area.

The Roar’s live blog will kick off as soon as the event begins, so make sure you don’t miss a thing by getting back here this evening.
