Two meetings to look at on Friday, with my focus at Mildura and Shepparton. The best bets for the respective programs are down below.

Mildura

Best bet: Race 1 Number 2 I’m Loki
Looks like a great way to start the program. This is a former Western Australia pacer that is having start one for Kate Hargreaves with Alex Ashwood in the sulky. We have seen time and time again with these pacers from WA, they are just better than the Eastern state brigade, especially in a class of races like this. I’m Loki has gate speed so should lead comfortably and at Mildura, that is the A1 spot to be.

Next-best: Race 3 Number 2 Miss Serena
This mare is best suited over the sprint trip so back to the 1790m is a big tick for her. You’d have to say that her recent form has been quite plain, but she gets a good set up here with the lead likely to be hers and the depth here compared to her recent outings isn’t overly strong.

Value: Race 6 Number 1 Skippers Swan Song
She is worth an each-way ticket at a decent price. Just got into a tricky spot from the second-row draw last time so I’d be willing to pen that run. She had the box seat sit the start prior and battled away really well when second. That is the type of run she’ll get here and can run a much-improved race at odds.

Shepparton

Best bet: Race 7 Number 10 Hell Of A Memory
NSW pacer that looks quite smart and confident he can measure up to this lot. He is first up here, having not raced since recording a very tough win in the Goulburn Guineas after being wide no cover for the last lap. A good test here to see where he is at, but he gets Greg Sugars to steer and a recent trial win was very encouraging.

Next-best: Race 8 Number 8 Jemsoms Pet
A quality four-year-old that resumes and he should get the perfect sit in the run behind a fast beginner and likely leader. He was far from disgraced during the Super Series when last in work but just lacked the class to go with them when it counted. The trial win was a sharp piece of work and he will prove hard to beat.

Value: Race 3 Number 1 Always Be Chloe
This looks a pretty thin race for the juveniles so happy to speck the one with hard race experience. Admittedly she hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in her career to date, but she does get a lovely trailing draw to use this time around, potentially sitting behind Tooby Gold and gets the box seat. If that eventuates, she can run a much-improved race.
