There are two meetings to look at on Friday, with my focus at Mildura and Shepparton.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Mildura

Best bet: Race 4, Number 9, Hot Deal
It looks like the best on the program. The first run at the track came last start, which was two weeks ago. This horse had a second-row draw but looked a good thing on paper and duly bolted up, justifying the short quote. There is a bit more depth to this line, but he looks like the most progressive of the lot.

Next best: Race 5, Number 8, Lillies
She panels on this lot, surely? This horse is a stakes-performed filly that is taking on what looks like a moderate bunch. This horse’s last run came in the Australian Pacing Gold Final when outclassed behind Tough Tilly, who is a superstar. That form to Mildura, even allowing for the second-row draw, should see her win.

Value: Race 7, Number 1, Blue Beach Angel
I can make a case for this girl at a big price. I was on her back at odds here last Friday but this horse galloped soon after the mobile sped away and that sealed her fate, finishing last. If she brings her best manners and can hold a forward spot, she’s in with a shout at odds.

Shepparton

Best bet: Race 5, Number 10, Concealment
This horse has class and that will be enough to get him home. This horse spanked them fresh at Globe Derby before going to Ballarat where he was dragged back from the wide gate and couldn’t produce the change-up speed required to win. Good speed engaged, he can sit back and finish best.

Next Best: Race 3, Number 3, Geraldton Wax
This horse is a former NSW pacer that was having start one for the Potter camp when resuming at this track. This horse had the dream sit behind the speed before angling into clear air to build momentum and she was quite impressive when let down, winning nicely. This horse has gate speed, so should find the front and prove hard to get past.

Value: Race 8, Number 4, Our Spitfire
This horse is a Brent Lilley-trained mare that has returned pretty well. Bad manners were on display fresh at Yarra Valley. This horse raced there again when getting away cleanly. This horse led and fought on well to run fourth. Provided she jumps clean, she’ll lead and can give a sight at odds.
