There are two meetings to look at on Thursday, with Kilmore and Redcliffe getting my focus.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Kilmore

Best bet: Race 3, Number 5, Loose Cash
This is a tricky meeting but I am confident this guy is the best on the program. He has had two runs after a break of more than two years. He has attempted to lead throughout in both runs and has been run down by some nice types. The depth here isn’t as strong and with Chris Alford to steer, he’ll lead and take running down.

Next best: Race 8, Number 3, Spring In His Step
He has the gate speed to find the front and that will ensure he will have a head start over his main rival Captain Bellasario. He ran second in quite a strong race last time out after opting for a sit behind the speed. I suspect it will be an aggressive drive from the outset to lead and prove hard to get past.

Value: Race 9, Number 4, Abundance
This three-year-old trot race is an even one, so I am looking to play each way via this filly. She is getting better and better with race experience. She was never a threat at Geelong last time out, but I liked the way she finished her race. If she does everything right and is within range on the turn, she’s capable.

Redcliffe

Best bet: Race 1, Number 4, Ballerini
Dennis Picker looks to have a strong hand at this meeting and I’m confident the NSW-based trainer can kick things off on the right note in the opener. This horse was beaten a fair way fresh at Goulburn, but that race looked to have good depth to it. It was clearly stronger than here. This horse just has to show a slight hint of improvement and she’ll be too good.

Next best: Race 5, Number 2, Misty Creek
It is not easy for a juvenile taking on the older horses, but he is a smart juvenile that is heading towards better races this prep, so he can tick off this race before then. This horse was excellent in defeat last time out at Albion Park when third to Dangerzone. That is strong two-year-old form in Queensland, so he’ll do me here.

Value: Race 7, Number 1, Pago Pago
He’ll likely go around at a decent price and from the pole, he should get every chance. This horse led here last time out and tired late in a disappointing effort, but the form prior was sound. It will be interesting to see what the tactics will be, whether they hold the lead or opt for cover. Either way, he’ll run a positive race.
