There are two meetings to look at on Friday night, with my focus at Newcastle and Mildura. The best bets for the respective programs are down below.

Newcastle

Best bet: Race 4 Number 1 Rockabella Starz
I’m pretty confident that this mare can lead throughout. She ot the job done last Friday night from the front and it was a tough display given the amount of pressure ahe copped. She has the gate speed to hold the front from the pole and from there, she’ll take running down and prove hard to get past.

Next-best: Race 6 Number 6 Touche
A former Kiwi that makes her Australian debut and I’m confident it will be a winning one. This race does lack serious depth and despite this mare bringing over just fair New Zealand form, it’s certainly good enough to take this out. The market will be the guide but I suspect it’ll be strong for her.

Value: Race 1 Number 9 Mister Woodport
A bit of a throw at the stumps in the opener but at the odds, this four-year-old can run a positive race. He ran here last Friday night and made up good ground from the back in a tidy effort. He potentially lands leaders back, three-back at worst, and from there, will do no work. If he gets lucky, he’ll be in the finish.

Mildura

Best bet: Race 1 Number 10 Cruzin Lyndal
If she produced anything near her best, she wins and wins comfortably. The jury is out on whether she likes Mildura because her two runs at the track have been plain. That said, she has a bit on these in terms of class and even allowing for the second-row draw, she’s quite clearly the one to beat.

Next-best: Race 3 Number 8 Beau Steele
The lacklustre trial is the only thing stopping this guy from being a good thing. He’ll win but the trial is a dampener. He showed good promise in the first prep and looks like he will win races. Just the trial…it didn’t leave me with confidence but if he brought the race-day form, it’s race over.

Value: Race 5 Number 1 Outa Control
An experienced campaigner at Mildura and does have gate speed, so will be interesting to see what they do from the pole, whether they hold the lead from the pole or opt for cover. To be fair, there doesn’t appear to be great gate speed on the front row, so he could hold the front and give some cheek at a price. His recent form suggests he could run a positive race at odds in a race like this.
