Star Brisbane forward Joe Daniher has been fined for staging during the Lions’ comprehensive AFL win against Geelong.
The Lions spearhead was rewarded with a free kick during the second quarter at the Gabba on Thursday night, with match review officer Michael Christian offering a $1500 fine, which can be downgraded to $1000 if Daniher accepts an early guilty plea.
Daniher appeared to throw himself forward in a marking contest, with Geelong defender Lachie Henderson bemused by the umpire’s verdict to pay his opponent a free kick.
Former Essendon forward Daniher converted the free kick, booting one of his four goals to help the Lions to a memorable 44-point win.
Several media commentators questioned the Daniher’s tactics but the 27-year-old is not the first player to try and play for a free kick.
Meanwhile, star Geelong defender Tom Stewart copped a $1500 for wrestling with dynamic Brisbane forward Charlie Cameron during the second term.
The match became heated when Stewart threw Cameron to the ground, with the Lions star earning a free kick and a 50-metre penalty.
