Tokyo Olympics Day 2: Barty upset in first round, three medals and WR at the pool

All eyes were on the pool on Sunday and Australia delivered three medals, while Australians stepped out for the first time in new sports surfing and skateboarding. The Boomers’ opener against Nigeria and more swimming heats highlights the night program..

After a tight first 3 quarters, the Boomers have stormed away to beat Nigeria 84-65. It was an impressive last stanza from Australia who have got their Olympics campaign off to a winning start

Half time in the basketball and the Boomers lead 43-40. Pretty scrappy from both teams with plenty of turnovers. Patty Mills has 11 points and Joe Ingles 9 points. Let’s hope the Boomers can come away with this.

Ajla Tomljanovic has progressed to the second round of the women’s tennis. She led Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5 3-2 before Shvedova retired. Australia has 3 doubles matches still to come tonight

Australia and Nigeria are 23-23 after the first quarter.

Some big news in golf, with Jon Rahm testing positive for COVID. He is officially out of the Games with Adri Arnaus Spain’s only representative.

The Boomers and Nigeria are underway. Australia lead by 3 halfway through the first quarter

Moving to tennis, Max Purcell has scored a 6-4 7-6 win over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Alja Tomljanovic is up 7-5 2-0 over Yaroslava Shvedova in the women’s singles

Anna Kiesenhofer has scored a big upset to hold on and win gold for Austria in the women’s road race. Annemiek van Vleuten won silver for the Netherlands and Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini won bronze

With her second run in the canoe slalom, Jessica Fox has set the best time and will go into the semi finals as the fastest qualifier!

Kiesenhofer has under 10kmns to go in the women’s race. She is 2 and a half minutes ahead of Anna Plichta and Omer Shapira and a further minute back to the peloton. The Dutch are coming.

We are watching something amazing here. Anna Kiesenhofer has maintained her 2 minutes lead with around 15kms to go.

Kiesenhofer’s lead has been reduced to under 2 minutes with 20kms. There are perhaps 30 cyclists in a group behind her and the winner is likely to come from there. Sadly, the Australians are out of contention at this stage

Montenegro have shown their class in the final quarter, coming away with a 15-10 win over Australia in the men’s water polo

Anna Kiesenhofer retains her 5 minutes lead with 30kms to go in the women’s road race. The peloton is catching Annemiek van Vleuten.

The lead group has split with Anna Kiesenhofer (Austria) now leading from Omer Shapira (Israel) and Anna Plichta (Poland). Van Vleuten remains 5mins behind with under 40kms to go. The peloton has reformed with all 4 Australians back in.

Australian Max Purcell has taken the first set 6-4 against the Canadian 9th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the men’s tennis singles. Purcell does hold an early break in the second set

Half time in the water polo and the Sharks are hanging onto a 7-6 lead

Major developments in the women’s road race. The Dutch team put massive pressure on the peloton during a long climb. They have dropped a lot of riders including the 4 Australians. Dutch star Annemiek van Vleuten has broken clear of the peloton and is now in chase of the lead group. She would be favourite now for gold with 50kms to go.

Australia are taking it to the world number 1 men’s water polo team, Montenegro. The Aussies lead 5-4 at quarter time with Richard Campbell scoring a hattrick.

Just an update on the women’s road race. There is now under 60kms to go and the leaders’ gap to the peloton is under 9 mins. The Australian women remain in the peloton

One of the real superstars of these Games, Simone Biles, is currently in the qualifying round for Artistic Gymnastics. She did make a few mistakes in her floor routine but looks certain to qualify for the finals. Emily Whitehead and Georgia Goodwin are currently competing for Australia

Australia come up against Montenegro in the men’s water polo shortly. Montenegro are ranked no 1 in the world so a big test for the Sharks

In another update, Julian Wilson has survived his repechage round so all 4 Australian surfers have progressed to the final 16

There is under 80km remaining in the Women’s Road Race and there is almost 20mins between the lead group and the peloton. Obviously a long way to go but the peloton will be getting wary. The Australian team is sitting in the peloton at this stage

Good afternoon all, David Holden here until 8pm tonight. The first run of the Women’s Canoe Slalom heat is done and Jessica Fox has come in second. Another run to come later today but she is a certainty to progress to the semi finals on Tuesday

James Duckworth has won his tennis singles match to join John Millman in the second round.

While Barty’s loss will sting, there have been a few Aussie wins in the last hour. The Hockeyroos have beaten Spain 3-1, while Sally Fitzgibbons won her second surfing heat. Meanwhile Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar have won their beach volleyball first round match.

Canoe hopeful Jess Fox will be on a little later, as well.

Ash Barty is out of the singles in the first round. The Wimbledon champ and world No.1 has been beaten 6-4, 6-3 by the 48th-ranked Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.

Barty is serving to stay in the singles competition. Down 5-3 and serving in the second. She has given up two match points but saves one.

Barty has made 50 unforced errors to 12, and her 28 winners to five can’t overcome that.

Barty is on the rack in her first round match, now down a set and a break at 4-3. Her Spanish opponent is ranked 48th, has won one career title and has never been ranked higher than 46. The Wimbledon champion needs to dig deep here.

Mixed news out of the pool for Australia – the women’s softball team has gone down in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1 to the USA at the death. Ashleigh Barty has lost the first set to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, but Sally Fitzgibbons has claimed a first-round win in her surfing heats.

After turning for home in seventh, Smith stormed home in the freestyle leg to earn himself a medal. Well done!

American Chase Kalisz claims the gold.

“It’s unbelievable. 12 months ago when the Games were postponed, I thought, ‘give me another year to better my preparation’. To improve that much and get on the podium is just incredible,” Smith said.

A great result for Australian surfer Owen Wright, who won his first heat comfortably!

Meanwhile, medal hope Brendon Smith is about to begin in the men’s 400m individual medley.

A bit of a quiet start for the Australians this morning but Julian Wilson is surfing in the third heat of the men’s event. He is in fourth place of four though and needs something special in small conditions in the final 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, Shane O’Neill is about to become our first ever skateboarding Olympian in the men’s street event.

Good morning everyone This is Tony Harper kicking off the live coverage this morning. And what better way to kick off a lazy Sunday morning than to head out for a refreshing surf?

We are seeing the debut fo the sport at an Olympics today with four Aussies coming up in the heats.

Seven-time world champ Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons, Julian Wilson and Owen Wright will make history as Australia’s first Olympic surfers when they take to Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba, east of Tokyo.

The Australian surfing team have been officially named The Irukandjis after the extremely venomous species of jellyfish that inhabit Australian marine waters. The Irukandjis name was generously gifted to Surfing Australia by the local Yirrganydji people of North Queensland.

It should be an exciting day so keep checking in with us.

It’s no secret that the swimming pool is where Australia shines and it’s where a large proportion of our medals in Olympic history have come from.

There will be plenty of pressure on the likes of Bronte Campbell and Mollie O’Callaghan to swim strongly in the relay final.

Staying in the water and the Australian men’s waterpolo team will be in action against Montenegro this afternoon while Australia’s Jessica Fox is in action in the K1 kayak heats from 2:30pm AEST.

Fox is already known as Australia’s greatest canoe slalom paddler of all-time and she’ll be hoping to back up her World Cup performances with a gold in Tokyo.

Other events of interest are the women’s road race in cycling, the Boomers, led by flagbearer Patty Mills taking on Nigeria in basketball and the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras both in action with the women playing this morning against Spain.

Don’t forget that Ash Barty will also be playing her first round match today in the women’s singles after winning through in the doubles yesterday.
