The San Jose Sharks got the steal of the NHL draft on July 23, 2021.

William Eklund could have easily been in the top three picks of the draft. However, Eklund fell to seventh in the draft.

Why is Eklund the best pick of the draft?

Statistics show Eklund’s points record of 23 points in 40 games in the SHL. The SHL consists of players that were older than him and to put an 18-year-old rookie into the Swedish league and record points like that, it is a sure surprise that he fell to seventh in the draft.

Eklund was a guaranteed top-five pick. However, other teams’ scouting suggests that this was not the case.

The comparison of Eklund to other legendary NHL players is remarkable.

He is projected to be compared to the next Pavel Datsyuk and with a comparison like that, with such a legendary player, it is massive for the San Jose Sharks’ organisation.

Here is a short preview of Eklund’s playmaking ability in the Swedish league.

It is an absolute steal that Eklund goes to San Jose. In my projected scouting, I would have seen him picked up at either three or four, perhaps even closer at two.

San Jose fans have a lot to cheer about when it comes to this kind of player’s ability and his potential is catastrophic when it comes to putting up points in the future.

Finally, when it comes to the near future, remember the name if you follow the NHL.

William Eklund will cause severe damage to the opposition and will one day be a star in the NHL.
