The Opals face the toughest quarterfinal possible when they match up against the United States in the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics basketball competition this afternoon.

The Australians got the job done by the skin of their teeth in the last pool match, beating Puerto Rico by enough points to make it through to the knockout stages after losses to China and Belgium.

The Opals were eliminated at this stage in 2016, and have stuggled to gel as a team and overcome the loss of Liz Cambage, who walked out on them in the lead up camp.

In the absence of Cambage, Marianna Tolo (26 points and 17 rebounds) was outstanding as the Opals overcame Puerto Rico by 27 points, having needed to win by a 24 point margin to advance.

The Americans won’t hold too many suprises for the Aussies, many of whom have spent time playing in the WNBA in the US.

But for Australia to win they’ll have to end an impressive record that stands at 52 consecutive Olympic matches without defeat after the US team’s 93-82 win over France. The Americans also beat Nigeria and Japan, but trailed at quarter time in all three matches.

The tip off for Opals vs United States is 2.40pm AEST Wednesday, which is 1.40pm local time in Tokyo. If you’re watching from the Western side of Australia, the Opals start time is 12.40pm AWST.
