We return to Randwick this Saturday for what shapes as another good day of racing, with some big guns returning in the Missile Stakes as spring draws near.

The dry track is another big plus, although the rail has been brought in seven metres from last week, so again it’s a ‘watch this space’ to see if it favours those near the front.

Dixie’s 2021 tally
Outlay: 318 units
Return: 410.90 units
Stats are based on one unit being equal to a $1 win bet, New South Wales dividends. See the comments for any changes based on scratchings or track condition.

Sydney racing selections

Race 1 – 9 Larkspur Run (one unit)
I am happy to have a nibble in the opener on 9. Larkspur Run. She didn’t beat much first-up but really tore them apart. The step up to 1400 metres looks like a plus as well. Her Godolphin buddy 8. Vianello is the threat coming back from better races. 1. Vreneli has the best form but is punished weight-wise.

Race 2 – 8 Pecuniary Interest (two units)
The distance doyen John Sargent brings 8. Pecuniary Interest to town after breaking through at his first 2400-metre run. He drops massively in weight for this and meets 5. Arabolini three kilos better than two starts ago at Gosford, so he can turn around the three lengths between them there. I had 2. Spencer next best. This horse is suited at the trip and by the dry track, and should go well.

There is no bet in Highway. I was interested in 13. Silverdeel after he bolted in at Narromine (yes, Narromine), but with her scratching I’ll sit it out.

Race 4 – 6 Invinciano (two units)
Everything seems to set up nicely for 6. Invinciano in this one. She should be able to dictate from in front, 1500 looks her best journey and the good track is a massive plus. This horse is very hard to beat. The challengers? 5. Papal Warrior is having a great prep but might be better with some give in the surface, 4. Above and Beyond loves it dry. The risk is jumping from 1200 to 1500 metres second-up from a spell. He was good fresh though so should be in the mix.

I am leaving the Midway alone this week too, although the early money on 10. Savvy Crown (who I tipped when third last time) has me interested if pressed.

Race 6 – 4 More Prophets (one unit)
I couldn’t go without 4. More Prophets. She’s been racing at a higher level than this and trialled well. She’ll get back and have the last crack at them. 10. Eight Diamonds was a red pen job last start. If she’s back to 100 per cent she goes close. 13. Lisdoonvarna (named after the Irish festival town, nice one) is way better with a hard track so should improve.

Race 7 – 2 Viridine (one unit)
I’ll reluctantly take 2. Viridine to notch his first win in about a year. He’s been good at weight-for-age his last two runs, gets a drop in weight from that and is at his best at 1200 metres on a firm surface. I’m always wary of 1. Kolding as he builds up to his preferred mile. He loves HQ and is a superstar. 6. Chat won well for us fresh. This is much tougher but he can accelerate and give it a shake.

There is no bet in Race 8. There is a lot of speed. I would be working around 2/3/4 and 6 in the quaddies and other multiples.

Race 9 – 12 Nikohli Beagle (one unit)
I love the quick back-up for 12. Nikohli Beagle. He’s obviously pulled up well since he hit the line hard last week. He meets 7. Sixgun three kilos to the good for less than a length there. I have him turning it around. 9. Brazen Gem is always in my numbers. She’ll be double figures again and can bob up, particularly being on dry. 4. Fastconi is a good show on his big win last time.

Race 10 – 2 Blondeau (one unit)
I found the last very tricky to work through, with no obvious speed and a lot of evenly-rated runners. 2. Blondeau comes down in grade and distance after (finally) getting it done last start. He goes well at 1300 and the improving track is no bother. He hasn’t started at better than $5 this prep and the $7 around right now is generous. 4. Tycoonist might snatch the lead and is good at the trip and the conditions. 12. No Impediment comes down in weight and goes okay. 11. Kinsheir rates well but is very short considering he hasn’t raced for almost a year.

It is another tricky little Saturday. I hope you’re safe and well on the lounge and the track and field entertains between races.

Please hit me up with your tips around the place across the day.
