Carlton are yet to make a call on David Teague’s future and say their football department leaders will be involved in discussing the AFL club’s external review before any decisions are made.

Teague had expected to learn on Monday whether he’ll continue with the Blues into 2022, the final season of his three-year contract and was all but resigned to losing his job.

But on Monday, new Carlton president Luke Sayers said the board would consult with senior football department leaders about the review – completed by Geoff Walsh, Matthew Pavlich and Graham Lowe – this week and wouldn’t be rushed into any major decisions.

“With our AFL season complete, our club is now in a position to fully brief the senior leaders of the football department on the review findings,” Sayers said in a letter to club members.

“This process will commence this week and will involve consultation between the board and football department regarding the recommendations provided.

“The club will take the necessary time required to absorb this review and any outcomes or decisions will be made on the time frame that is in the best interest of the club, not based on external expectations or pressure.”

Teague was among those to arrive at Ikon Park early on Monday morning ahead of meetings.

He had previously flagged his expectation a call would be made on his future at the start of the week – and didn’t expect it to fall in his favour.

“I’m guessing, I think it’s going to be Monday,” Teague said after Saturday night’s 14-point loss to GWS.

“I had a chat this week and they said after the game, they’ll get together, the board and have a look at that.

“… yeah, I understand the club’s gonna make a decision. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t look like it’s going to go in my favour.

“But in terms of what I’ve done and what I’ve been able to control: I know who I am, I know how I’ve done it, I’m really happy with it.”

In the past week, Teague has lamented a perceived lack of support from within Carlton as pressure mounted on his position in just his second full season in the hot seat.

The 40-year-old has coached Carlton to 21 wins and 29 defeats since initially taking over as a caretaker coach ahead of round 12, 2019.

He was named full-time coach in August that year and signed a three-year deal.
