The return of Cristiano Ronaldo can’t come soon enough for Manchester United judging by their unconvincing 1-0 English Premier League win at Wolverhampton.

Teenager Mason Greenwood’s 80th minute winner ensured United broke the record for the longest unbeaten away run in English Football League history.

United are now unbeaten on the road for 28 games, beating Arsenal’s record set between April 2003 and September 2004.

But United will be looking forward to Ronaldo providing much needed firepower after their underwhelming performance against Wolverhampton who missed a host of chances on Sunday.

United agreed to a deal with Juventus on Friday to bring Ronaldo back to the club where he spent six seasons between 2003 and 2009, winning eight major trophies during that time plus the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player in 2008.

United only remained in the match on Sunday thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper David de Gea who kept out a string of chances including two close-range efforts from Romain Saiss.

“It’s like a dream to have him back, it will be great – it’s already great, you can feel it in the atmosphere,” de Gea told Sky Sports.

“Hopefully he can bring something special to make the team even better.”

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also relishing the 36-year-old Portugal international’s return.

“Of course we need to get the paperwork done and we can get it sorted and we can announce it very soon,” Solskjaer said. 

“And then he is away with Portugal.

“We will get him back to Manchester with (Portugal teammate) Bruno (Fernandes), and hopefully he will be involved as soon as possible.”

Wolves were furious in the aftermath of 19-year-old Greenwood’s winning strike – his third goal in as many games – as they felt United midfielder Paul Pogba had fouled Ruben Neves in the build-up.

United now have seven points to sit in third place, while Wolves stay 18th without a point or goal.

Meanwhile, Son Heung-min marked his 200th Premier League appearance with the only goal of the game against Watford to send Tottenham into the international break top of the table.

Son’s 42nd minute free-kick was the difference between the sides in north London and meant that Nuno Espirito Santo became the first Spurs boss to win his first three league games in charge since Arthur Rowe in 1949.

Patrick Bamford’s late equaliser rescued Leeds a point in a 1-1 draw at Burnley to leave both sides chasing their first Premier League win of the season.

Chris Wood gave Burnley a second-half lead against his former club, but Bamford celebrated his England call-up with his first goal of the campaign with five minutes remaining.
