There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with Geelong and Menangle getting my focus. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Geelong

Best bet: Race 5, Number 8, Tango Tara
Drawing inside the second row is the reason the price for this mare is backable. On form, she’s a genuine $1.10 chance and has panels on these. This horse was a Group 3 winner at Ballarat two back before racing at at Kilmore when wide the last lap and just feeling the pinch late. Only bad luck beats her.

Next best: Race 7, Number 8, Wolf Stride
He is the best horse in this race, by some distance. The query is how well he is going but the trials indicate he’s come back well and Andy Gath is a master at improving a tried horse, never mind getting his hands on a star, which this horse is. This horse likely has to do work in order to win, but I am confident he can.

Value: Race 1, Number 1, Azza
I am happy to take a chance each way with this six-year-old, who was unlucky at Bendigo last time out. This horse showed gate speed and was looking to hold a forward spot but contacted another sulky, got buried back on the pegs and lost all hope. He can land leaders back here and be quite dangerous.

Menangle

Best bet: Race 3, Number 1, Smooth Debate
The market will be fascinating with this mare, a former Kiwi that makes her Australian debut for Jason Grimson, one of the best stables in NSW when it comes to improving a tried horse. This horse was a strong winner at Addington prior to coming across down under, and she has gate speed. She could easily blow this field away because the depth isn’t strong.

Next best: Race 1, Number 2, Never Been Said
The set-up is just perfect for this mare. This horse has a stablemate drawn inside who has decent gate speed and holds the lead, so that should give this mare a lovely sit behind, and we know that when she is cuddled, saved for the final 400 metres, she can unleash a brilliant finale. If that eventuates, I’m keen on her winning this.

Value: Race 6, Number 2, Lets Katchmeifucan
This horse has a soft gate to use and 1×3 at double figures is worth a bet. Forget he went around behind Cash N Flow last time out when dragged back and getting keen in the run, leaving himself without much left for the straight. If he can land leaders back here, he’ll be dangerous.
