As FIFA openly touts a biennial football World Cup, rugby has made it clear that it continues to consider the same idea of a battle for the Webb Ellis Cup every two years.

According to a report in the London Telegraph, World Rugby could consider the possibility of holding men’s and women’s Rugby World Cup every two years instead of four.

The men’s tournament was first held in 1987 and has been staged every four years.

The first women’s World Cup took place in 1991 and after a three-year gap to 1994, it has been held every four years.

“Biennial World Cups have been considered before and they’re definitely something that we will continue to consider,” chief executive of World Rugby Alan Gilpin told the Telegraph.

“It’s an interesting concept, especially when you think about the global development of the women’s game, too.

“But the men’s calendar is very congested and complex, with a lot of different stakeholders, and we have to make sure we engage with them all before we consider a World Cup every two years.”
