Carlton have officially appointed Port Adelaide assistant and ex-Brisbane coach Michael Voss as their new senior coach from season 2022 onwards.

Voss had long been touted as a candidate to return to the senior ranks after having spent seven seasons as the senior assistant with the Power. He had been considered the frontrunner for the current Carlton vacancy for some time, following the public withdrawals of Hawthorn legend Alastair Clarkson and ex-St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon.

In a statement, Blues president Leo Sayers claimed Voss’ “strong understanding of the key fundamental requirements for Carlton right now” stood him out from the other candidates.

“With Michael, we are getting someone who knows exactly what it takes to achieve high performance — which is consistently winning games of football, to provide the opportunity to compete in September and ultimately win premierships. He has experienced the ultimate triumph as a captain, he’s played a big role in driving success as an assistant coach and it’s where we want to get to at this football club.

“We know that we have a highly talented, versatile playing group and we firmly believe that Michael is the person to get the most out of our players as people and as athletes.

“We are looking forward to each of them getting to work with Michael, as well as his new assistant coaching staff, and we are excited to begin this next reset phase together with the entire Carlton family, starting with pre-season in November,” he said.

A triple premiership captain and Brownlow medallist, Voss was once thought to be the shoo-in as Gold Coast’s first ever coach, but Leigh Matthews resignation at the end of 2008 saw the Lions pounce and bring back their favourite son from West Coast to replace him.

His first season as Lions coach saw them return to the finals after a four-year absence and defeat the Blues in a memorable elimination final. But a horror trade period, headlined by the disastrous trade for Brendan Fevola, saw the club ruin its list and flounder in the following seasons.

Voss was abruptly sacked late in the 2013 season, despite fortunes improving, with the Lions widely believed to be in pursuit of Paul Roos. However, Roos chose Melbourne and Voss’ sudden departure was cited as a factor in the infamous ‘go-home five’ debacle that offseason.

After taking 2014 off, Voss joined the Power as midfield coach in 2015 and retained that position until today’s announcement.
