There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with my attention being at Ballarat and Menangle. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Ballarat

Best bet: Race 4, Number 13, Plymouth Chubb
He’s a star juvenile trotter and barring bad luck, he’ll be winning again despite the draw. He had to do work in the run at Stawell last time out but his class came to the fore and he was much too good for his rivals. He can work and still be effective at the end so I’m clearly in his corner.

Next best: Race 5, Number 3, Santa Casa Beach
This horse is a quality four-year-old that resumes and he can resume a winner. This horse is a Russell Jack-trained gelding that is first up, having not raced since July 17 when down the track in a strong Geelong race. From the draw, he has the gate speed to lead this field and from there, he will take beating.

Value: Race 3, Number 1, Whattflynn
He’ll go around at really good odds and with that in mind, he’s worth an each-way speck. He ran at Terang on Tuesday night and was good in defeat from a wide gate when third. This horse has drawn the pole. He should land leaders back and get every chance and with luck getting clear, he can win this.

Best bet: Race 4, Number 1, Smaltese
This horse is arguably the best two-year-old male pacer in NSW. He can do a bit wrong in the run but when he puts it all together, he has a motor, as displayed when winning here last time out and smashing the clock late from the front. This horse could get crossed, but whatever the early pace, he leads and wins.

Next best: Race 6, Number 4, Expensive Ego
He will likely have to do work in order to win, but he has shown in the past he can do work in the run and still be sharp at the end. He comes here first up, so race fitness isn’t there, but looked to be spot on after a recent trial in fast time. This horse likely has to sit parked, but class gets him home.

Value: Race 1, Number 1, Pump The Brakes
Ignatius looks the likely winner but if he is off his game, then this guy can definitely win and will go around at a good price. He’s had little luck with gates in recent runs but that all changes here with the pole, where he will stalk Ingnatius and from there, should get every chance.
