Reed Mahoney has reportedly informed the Eels he will leave at the end of next season, paving the way for the hooker to join the Bulldogs.

After dining with Canterbury officials including general manager Phil Gould and coach Trent Barrett earlier this month, Mahoney will reportedly take up a four-year deal at Belmore from 2023.

It will be a full-circle move for the 23-year-old, who played for the Bulldogs’ SG Ball and under-20s teams before being told he wasn’t in the club’s NRL plans.

Debuting for Parramatta in 2018, the tough dummy-half has played 73 NRL games and was on the verge of a maiden Queensland Origin appearance this year until a shoulder issue intervened.

Without the injured Mahoney’s influence, the Eels valiantly made it to week two of the 2021 finals but just lacked the firepower to challenge for the title.

His departure would be another gut punch to Parramatta after second-rower Isaiah Papali’i last week announced he will switch to the Wests Tigers in 2023.

The Eels have since locked up captain Clint Gutherson until the end of 2025, but NSW Origin prop Junior Paulo remains unsigned beyond next year.
