No play is expected on day one of England’s final tour game before the Ashes series opener in Brisbane next week, in another blow to the tourists’ preparations.

Only 29 overs were possible in last week’s England v England Lions tour game at Peter Burge Oval, the rain cruelly returning overnight to spoil their rematch at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane on Tuesday.

More rain is expected later on Tuesday and again on Wednesday and Thursday – with Australia’s intra-squad hit-out from Wednesday is also likely to be impacted.

The latest weather forecast means England’s star men Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Stuart Broad and James Anderson could enter next Wednesday’s Gabba Test opener without any time in the middle.

Stokes, who took time off to care for his mental health, in particular is desperate for some action given his last game of cricket was in July.
