There are two meetings to look at on Sunday, with Gunbower and Newcastle getting my attention.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Gunbower

Best bet: Race 8, Number 3, Imnopumpkin
This horse is a talented four-year-old that loves to lead and he’ll take beating from in front, box seat at worst. This horse’s two runs back from a break have been strong and from the inside gate here, he has the speed to lead early and each way, he’s a great gamble.

Next best: Race 1, Number 2, Ima Destroyer
This filly seems to race best when she can lead and she gets that set-up here. This horse had a dominant win three back at Maryborough before being outclassed in a Breeders Crown Heat. Then this horse went to Shepparton where she had a second-line draw and failed to come. This horse is much better suited here and should take beating.

Value: Race 7, Number 1, Grinning Assassin
This looks a tidy race on paper but I’m happy to speck this guy each way. This horse’s two runs back from a break have been more than sound, and he hasn’t done it with the help of inside gates. He gets that here, and hopefully he can hold leaders back. If that eventuates, he’s in with a shout at odds.

Newcastle

Best bet: Race 1, Number 2, Stravinsky
If the run at Penrith hasn’t busted him, he just wins this. It was one of the more impressive wins I’ve seen at that track. This horse was forced to do a power of work early before sitting outside the speed. He was entitled to knock right up but he was trucking, put them away and ran sizzling time. From gate two, he leads and wins.

Next best: Race 3, Number 2, Max Delight
He looks a good thing. He was excellent at Bathurst on Wednesday but he was entitled to run on given they were tracking to run sub 1.50 before the field got a stitch late, finishing third. From the front line, he should find the front and take a power of beating.

Value: Race 5, Number 11, Our Uncle Sam
I highly doubt he beats Expensive Ego, but he’s more of a place bet. He was luckless at Menangle, then just did too much work at Bathurst but was still good late in defeat. He should get a soft run in transit and is in with a shout to run second/third.
