Happy New Year punters, here’s hoping for a year of big collects.

We kick off 2022 with a quirky little card on the Kenso. I give a tick to on-pacers who can shoot away when racing here – particularly over the shorter trips.

Good luck all and stay safe.

Sydney racing selections

Race 3 – 5 Black Queen (one unit)
Current odds: $6
I am starting in a good distance race. 5. Black Queen has been quietly rising up the grades and running well at short prices. She can step up to Saturday grade for Team Waller and start a big day for Regan Bayliss. The money has come for 1. Herman Hesse, who carries weight but will roll forward and is the one to get past.

Race 4 – 6 Budhwar (one unit)
Current odds: $9
I’ve been drawn in again to 6. Budhwar. He’s been all around it this prep and at this level, the claim for Craig Williams and his likely role leading them up make him the one to beat. 3. Prince Invincible will probably be outside him and looks the danger.

Race 5 – 7 Forzanini (one unit)
Current odds: $4.40
I struggled to find an obvious leader here. Regan Bayliss can be reasonably positive with 7. Forzanini. She is two from two this prep and is well placed here.

Race 5 – 7 Bigboyroy (three units)
Current odds: $5.50
I’m in camp 7. Bigboyroy again today. He gets out to his pet trip (all four of his wins are at a mile) and drops to just 52.5 kilos. 4. Kirwan’s Lane is the big worry. He finally got the breaks and the W last start. Some big money has come for him pre-Saturday.

Race 7 – 3 De Grawin (two units)
Current odds: $4.40
One of my old faves, 3. De Grawin has had a good break after not being at her best in the winter. She trialled nicely into this and will have my money – and should lead from the good draw. 5. Leo is a really good horse and will challenge. 4. Dragonstone will likely sit just off, and has Bacchanalia form – I’ll risk him.

Race 8 – 3 For Valour (one unit)
Current odds: $6
In true Gai Waterhouse fashion, 3. For Valour will be revved up and go forward for our mate Regan Bayliss. He’s been at very short prices ($1.30-$2.80) through this prep and will be competitive here. 1. Toomuchtobear is a nice horse. I’ll risk with him likely to give a big start on a tight track.

Race 9 – 4 I Am Lethal (one unit)
Current odds: $4.40
The John O’Shea-trained 4. I Am Lethal ran sub-1.23 over 1400 at this track to win last time. That’s good going and he looks suited here in the same grade against his age group. The claim for Reece Jones is a big tick. 8. Kanazawa is one from one and comes here with some fans.

Race 10 – 13 Le Vizir (one unit)
Current odds: $13
I am happy to have a little play on 13. Le Vizir to finish the day. He bolted in fresh and has had excuses since. He should find a nice spot in this. Our boy Regan Bayliss again!
