The Melbourne Stars had ten players ruled out of their clash yesterday against the Scorchers, the Sydney Thunder have lost three players and in the latest development the Perth Scorchers now have two players in isolation.

As Covid-19 closes in on the Big Bash, I spoke to Sydney Thunder Star Jason Sangha, after their win over the Adelaide Strikers, about how he the situation is affecting his team.

Andrew Menczel: How is the mood in the team?

Jason Sangha: You know, it’s actually not too bad, like I know externally, it’s pretty annoying and pretty frustrating, but the guys have responded pretty well these last couple of days…

Yeah, the guys are in really good spirits and I’ve mentioned it before, it just shows how good the depth of our squad is to have our younger guys come in and guys that haven’t played much before this year to come in and play well. It’s really good to see.

Andrew Menczel: Are you worried about losing more players?

Jason Sangha: I think everyone’s obviously a bit more concerned, you know, being in Sydney or being wherever. I think these days you just have to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

So, I think guys are just being very cautious in terms of what we’re trying to do. We understand that the best thing for us is to stay safe and play.

If we do that for each other, and look out for each other, we give ourselves the best chance of performing on the field. But the guys are in really good spirits.

Andrew Menczel: Are you happy to keep playing?

Jason Sangha: Oh yeah. I don’t think there’ll be any person in BBL cricket that would want this competition to close. Fans would say the same. No one wants to be missing games of cricket.

At the end of the day, we want to play as much cricket as we can. And like we yeah, we’ll see what happens. But yeah, of course we want to play cricket

Andrew Menczel: Does losing too many players compromise the quality of the comp?

Jason Sangha: Not really like people could have said that, you know, we had a few guys out, you know, our best bowler last year, Tanvir, one of our better batters last year Alex Hales, Sam Whiteman, Alex Ross, how good he’s been.

People say we probably have some of our stars out as well, but it opens the door to someone like Ollie Davies who smacked them last game Arjun Nair comes back into the squad Gurinder Sandhu came back in today.

I don’t think it ruins the quality of the competition because, you know, we’ve just played two games without our best team, essentially, and you know, we’ve had two really convincing wins.

The final of the Big Bash is scheduled for January 28th.
