It took until the fourth Test of the series but England finally showed some fight to secure a thrilling draw at the SCG to prevent the chance of an Ashes whitewash.

After a run-in with the crowd, Jonny Bairstow let his bat do the talking scoring the visitor’s first century of the series and with it an average player rating of 8.13 from Roar readers.

Despite his knock and England’s gritty draw, the player ratings voted on by you show that Australia still held the aces.

Not surprisingly, Usman Khawaja was the player of the match and received no lower than a 9 from The Roar readers with 83 percent of you giving him a perfect 10 for his two tons in his comeback to the Test arena.

It was an even bigger match by Khawaja when you consider that most of Australia’s top order didn’t fire this time. What will be pleasing for Australia is the fact that Cameron Green stepped up in the second innings with some important runs and he received an average score of 6.94 as a result.

Steve Smith received an average rating of 5.61 for his 90 runs in the match and a big wicket in the dying stages. Perhaps it’s a sign of just how much we expect from Smith with the bat when a 67 in the first innings is deemed just above par.

Scott Bowling was again outstanding with the ball continuing his dream run to start his Test career.

For England, Ben Stokes was much more aggressive in Sydney – no doubt as a result of getting a rather big slice of fortune when Cam Green smashed the off-stump only for the bail to stay.

It was once again bittersweet for England fans who would wish he found that form earlier in the series.

It was fitting that England’s best players for the past decade were there to secure the draw with Jimmy Anderson blocking out the final over.

England already lost the Ashes but at least they won back some respect in Sydney and can leave the country on a high if they can snag a win in Hobart.
