Sydney racing returns to Rosehill this Saturday in the unusual role as the undercard to the big Magic Millions card on the Gold Coast (don’t worry – I’ve found a couple there).
Here at home, it’s a good summer meeting, my work was cut out with plenty of dual acceptors to sift through and some nice fresh horses returning in the sprints.
Race 1 – 5 Kir Royale (two units)
Current odds: $2.70
Keen on 5. Kir Royale as a bank builder to kick things off, she’s got the chocolates in two of her three career runs and gets a lovely weight drop here. Helped further by Sherry’s claim, think she goes on with it. 6. Kanazawa is the main danger, he started favourite when beaten by I Am Lethal last start, he’s in the big 3yo race at the GC today. 1. I Say Hello made a good return but is up in weight.
Race 2 – No bet with untried two year-olds. 1. Flashing Steel is the one to watch, he cost a cool $1 million and has a trial win under the belt.
Race 3 – 12 Pruscino (one unit)
Current odds: $9
Let’s see if non-TAB Riverina form can hold up in the big smoke! 12. Pruscino has bolted in recently winning by 10 at Quenbeyan and 6 at Cowra. Her one run in a Highway is a forget job, she went way too hard, if she can settle from in front I think she can give them something to chase. Pretty even bunch, maybe 9. Endangered Species is over the odds at 33/1?
Race 4 – 9 Finally Realise (one unit)
Current odds: $5.50
From the Highway to the Midway, pretty happy to get on 9. Finally Realise, he was very good at this level first-up, he’ll be better for that and has drawn perfectly again. 6. Sky Command is promising, but at $2.30 fresh at 1200 metres I’m going around.
Race 5 – 5 Niffler (one unit)
Current odds: $2.40
After finding one better last week, I’m going to take the shorts with 5. Niffler on the quick back-up, she’s had two goes at 1800 and now goes to 2000 metres, I think that’s the right trajectory and I’m taking it that she pulled up a treat if she’s back today. 8. Sword Point looks a nice type and is right down in weight, think my girl may have a class edge. 4. Fleetwood Maca is brilliantly named (kudos), with Dad being Rock’n’Pop out of Macavelli Miss. 3. High Court would be in my numbers if the track was dry.
Race 6 – 5 Loveplanet (one unit)
Current odds: $7.50
Good little race, 5. Loveplanet has been costly to followers, I’m jumping on now at the good price, he stays at 1500 metres after just going around last week and he’s ready now. Josh Parr jumps off 6. Caesars Palace to take the ride, think it’s a case of when Waller calls, you answer, but I like that move. 1. For Valour bolted in for us last time, up in weight I’m going to risk at my peril.
Race 7 – 1 Belucci Babe (one unit)
Current odds: $6.50
Keen on 1. Belucci Babe returning from a spell, I think Schiller’s claim is a huge tick and she was running against good horses (Quantico!) last time in. It seemed everyone else got the memo on 2. The Bopper last start, maybe it’s bitterness, but I’ll likely be watching him win (again!), the even money doesn’t excite me.
Race 8 – 5 Super Effort (one unit)
Current odds: $6
It’s Jay Ford’s time to shine, 5. Super Effort was very good fresh, I like the step up to 1350 metres second-up and the slow track is ideal. 3. Tamerlane is also nicely placed, he’ll be in a nice spot and this is his level. 9. Bowery Breeze is seemingly always at big odds and in the mix, with 52.5 kilos she’s a chance.
Race 9 – 10 Fastconi (two units)
Current odds: $7.50
10. Fastconi at 1200 metres is what I’m after, it’s his trip and I have him ready to fire second-up. There’s some big weights around, 11 and 12 come into it down the bottom. 5. Shadow Crush is flying but will need luck. We were on 4. Ranges last week, he backs up here, don’t do it to me!
Race 10 – 10 Star Cherie (one unit)
Current odds: $3.60
Finishing with the 10/10 double, 10. Star Cherie went to her break with two nice wins, she’s won a nice trial and is drawn well. Chasing late will be 6. Steel Diamond, she’s one of my favourites but for a little thing I’m not sure with the rise in weight to 58 kilos.
With the Sydney card done and dusted, there is one I’m keen on the glitter strip.
Gold Coast
Race 8 – 3 King of Sparta (Current odds: $6.50)
Love 3. King of Sparta, his sectionals at Gosford were excellent, his runs chasing Home Affairs and Paulele over the Spring carnival were A-1. 1400 metres is the question, I think he smashes it.
