Back to Randwick this week with a lot of stars making their returns in the lead up to the carnival.
The meeting is highlighted by two Group Twos (hello Richie), and while Espiona looks to have a strangle hold on the Light Fingers, The Apollo Stakes looks tricky with 12 of the 13 runners (including Verry Elleegant!) having their first run back from a spell. With rain falling as of Friday afternoon, the numbers have been crunched with a Soft 7 in mind.
BEST BET: Race 9 – 4 Snapdancer (3 units at $3.70) – Had the favours but bolted in on Millions day, posting big last 600 and overall times. Back to 1200 fine (3 from 5), in beautifully at the weights and should be in a good spot either outside leader or a pair back.
BEST VALUE – Race 2 – 9 Sucrose (1 unit at $31) – Good draw, likely leader, think Sucrose gets a few favours in the Highway. She won last start in her third run back from a year off, she’s fit, she’s not here for a holiday, at 30/1 I’ll dabble.
APOLLO STAKES – Race 8 – 10 Colette (1 unit at $6.50) – The Sheik’s rain dance may just have done the trick, and with any give in the ground all roads lead to the swimmer Colette. Colette beat Kolding and Verry Elleegant first-up in this race last year (slow 7), and considering a Group 1 win on dry over the spring, it’s possible to suggest she’s a better horse now.
