The countdown to round one is now down to its finals days with game-day line-ups starting to take shape for the March 10 kick-off.
Teams will be announced on Tuesday at 4pm AEDT and Canberra have already unveiled the biggest shock with Ricky Stuart revealing co-captain Jarrod Croker would not be in the line-up for Friday’s home clash with Cronulla.
Stuart told News Corp that Croker, on the comeback trail from knee surgery, would have to show he is back to his best in the NSW Cup before getting a recall to the top grade.
Canberra coach Ricky Stuart will give rising star Brad Schneider first crack at the No.7 jersey left vacant by Jamal Fogarty’s knee injury. Schneider, who got a taste of the NRL with one game last season, will partner Jack Wighton in the halves.
The Dragons are also set to leave out a big name or two with the SMH reporting Blues forward Tariq Sims and new recruit George Burgess are struggling to make the cut for their showdown with the Warriors on Saturday at Redcliffe.
Brisbane star Adam Reynolds will miss round one after returning a positive PCR test for COVID-19 last week.
The Broncos announced forward Kobe Hetherington and their captain had gone into isolation and would be forced to be away from the team for a week, ruling them out of next Friday’s home showdown with Reynolds’ former club South Sydney.
Reynolds’ absence means coach Kevin Walters will choose from Tyson Gamble, his son Billy Walters, rookie Ezra Mam and veteran Albert Kelly for the two halves berths.
Gold Coast and the Warriors were disadvantaged when their match in the second week of the trials was called off due to the wet weather in South-East Queensland, robbing them of a chance to try new combinations before the season proper.
Melbourne have received a stroke of good luck after injuries and suspensions have cut a swathe through their squad with Brandon Smith now available after the All Stars game was included in his ban, meaning he is available for their road clash with the Wests Tigers.

Payten said he was happy with how each player went against the Broncos but had not made a decision.
Second-rower is another area up for grabs and Connelly Lemuelu made a successful transition in the trials so he could pip young gun Heilum Luki for a starting berth. Veteran forward Lachlan Burr has retired on the eve of the season due to a hip problem.
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow played strongly at fullback with Valentine Holmes looking dynamic at centre – both players have the talent to make the most of their new positions.
