Well! That was one way to kick off the 2022 season!

In a round full of upsets, Thursday night saw the Panthers show us why they are the reigning champions, giving Turbo and his Sea Eagles a 28-6 grilling without Nathan Cleary. The Raiders beat the Sharks 24-19 in a game that came down to the wire, and the Broncos surprised the Bunnies 11-4. Kurt Capewell kicked a field goal – what were the betting odds on that?!

The Dragons fought back to take down the Warriors 28-16. The Storm got the two points from their 26-16 win against the Tigers, but it came at a great cost with Christian Welch and George Jennings both succumbing to season ending injuries, and Brandon Smith sidelined for a while with a broken hand.

The Eels beat the Titans 32-28 in a physical and at times spiteful clash, and the Bulldogs were lucky to get the win over the Cowboys 6-4 after a scrappy game in Townsville.

Oh yes, and the Knights had a glorious day ay the SCG on Saturday, beating the Roosters 20-6. Who saw that coming? (Insert Danielle’s smug look here)

So, after Round 1, AJ is out in front after somehow tipping 5/8, Mike is just behind on 4, with Mary, Paul, The Crowd and I all tipping a very low 3. My Knights beating the Roosters feels as good as tipping 8/8 though!

Ok, onto Round two.

The Storm will host the Bunnies tonight at AAMI park, their first home game in a very long time. It also brings up the magic 500 games for coach Craig Bellamy, and the return of one Latrell Mitchell for Souths.

We have two great games tomorrow night. The first sees the Panthers travel to Jubilee stadium to face the Dragons at 6pm, both teams coming off round one wins. The second has the Roosters and the Sea Eagles battling it out at the SCG at 8pm and the loser  0/2 by the end of the game.

Super Saturday kicks off at CBUS Stadium with the Titans and the Warriors at 3pm. The Sharks finally return home to Shark Park since 2020 due to Covid and renovations, playing the Eels at 5.30pm. The Cowboys and Raiders finish out the night with their match at 7.30pm in Townsville.

Sunday at 4pm sees the Knights host the Wests Tigers in Newcastle, and then the Bulldogs and the Broncos wrap up the round at Accor Stadium at 6.15pm.

If you would like to see how you go up against the Experts this round, just remember to get your tips in below by 5pm tonight to be counted in The Crowd’s tips.

Oh, I’m back on top of the tipping table? There’s a shock. Now I’m back where I belong, you’re all welcome to copy my tips and take charge in your own tipping competitions.

Also for your info, my tips for the next month or so come to you courtesy of endone, panadol, nurofen and meditation because i’ve ruptured my achilles tendon playing baseball and am headed for surgery next week.

So here’s everything you need to know about what’s coming in round 2!

Melbourne will continue the comedic record of South Sydney in the southern capital, with big ins offsetting some big outs.

Penrith will beat the Dragons, who will put up a reasonable enough fight but lack the class to unlock the Panthers.
The Roosters will scrape past the Sea Eagles in a total grinding stinker of a game where both teams try to atone for a bludger week one.

Titans over Warriors because they’re just better.

Sharks over Eels because I think Parra are juuuust a little slow out of the blocks defensively.

Your presumptive champion Canberra Raiders, the people’s team, will head north with their vaccination exemptions and make a 56-point mess of the doddery Cowboys, who were deplorable last week with horrific attacking options all around.

Newcastle are too good for the Tigers, but it might be closer than the fatalists think.
Finally, and I almost tipped Canterbury again here, but I’ll take a Broncos win on the back of their energy last week.

Storm, Panthers, Roosters, Titans, Eels, Raiders, Knights, Bulldogs

This is a lot more difficult to tip this week, especially on the back of the upsets last week.

I’m taking the Storm and Panthers to continue their strong starts, and I can’t see the Roosters being that bad two weeks in a row against Manly.

The Titans probably deserved a win last week but didn’t get over the line – the Warriors will be a bit more accommodating, especially without Shaun Johnson.

The hardest game of the round is the Sharks v Eels: with Cronulla returning home after years away, the pressure will be done, but I think the closeness of the score last week flattered them in a poor performance. My tip is Parra to get better and beat them.

Storm, Panthers, Roosters, Titans, Sharks, Raiders, Knights, Broncos

Melbourne have a habit of performing well in milestone games so they should beat the Bunnies by double digits based on what Souths dished up last week.

Penrith will deliver the Dragons a reality check, they won’t gift them the opportunities that the Warriors did in Round 1.

The Roosters tend to match up well against Manly and their SCG record (not counting last week) should be enough in a close one.

The Titans look like they’ve got a lot of points in them and the Warriors are already missing key players.

Cronulla are back home after two years behind enemy lines, aka Kogarah, so they should edge out Parramatta.

The Raiders have to be favourites to beat North Queensland in Townsville with the Cowboys coming off a loss to the wooden spooners.

The Knights will be too strong all round for the Tigers in Newcastle.

Brisbane are no sure thing to beat Canterbury but a team with Adam Reynolds is always the one to back in a tight tussle.

Storm, Panthers, Roosters, Titans, Eels, Raiders, Knights, Broncos.

Another tough game to start off this week’s tipping. I know that the Storm are missing several key players including Brandon Smith and Christian Welch, but I have learnt over the years not to underestimate the Storm especially when they play at home.

No doubt we will see a much-improved South Sydney performance with Latrell Mitchell back, but struggles in the halves mean I’m backing the Storm.

The Panthers showed last week that they are not to be underestimated and will beat the Dragons on Friday night with the Roosters to bounce back and beat the Manly Sea Eagles (who were my biggest disappointment after round one).

The Titans have at least remained consistent; in 2021 they showed that they can score points, but also that they can concede them too. That happened in their round one game against Parramatta. The Titans will be strong enough to outscore the Warriors, who still can’t seem to make a choice about what players to play in key positions.

Parramatta have a tough game against the Sharks on Saturday night. Despite their putrid defence on Sunday afternoon, I’m expecting improvement this week. I’m also pleading with Brad Arthur to leave Dylan Brown at six, I did not enjoy his shift to centre on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders will beat a struggling Cowboys (is it too early in the season to say the Cowboys are struggling) and the Knights will beat the Tigers in front of a home crowd.

Unbelievably I also think the Broncos will start the season 2/2 after they beat the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.

I’ve tipped the Storm in tonight’s match. They are finally back at home, it’s Bellamy’s 500th and Souths looked all over the place last round.

Panthers, Roosters and Titans should win comfortably, and I’ve gone the Sharks over the Eels in a close one.

The Cowboys weren’t overly bad last weekend, and the Raiders weren’t overly good.

I’m tipping the Cowboys to cause an upset at home.

Broncos will go back-to-back against the Bulldogs who were lucky to beat Nth Qld last weekend, and of course, I’m tipping my Knights.

Multi tip from PlayUp

Leg 1. $1.27 – Panthers to take care of Dragons, Could be tight but they should overpower them late.

Leg 2. $1.37 – Titans looked great last week, Warriors are still putting their season together and have some work to do.

Leg 3. $1.91 – Wests Tigers to cover the +7.5 line – be careful Newcastle may be too strong here.

As always if you’re going to have a punt gamble responsibly.
