Dragons forward Jaydn Su’A is facing a suspension after being charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle on Dale Finucane during his side’s defeat to Cronulla in Round 3.

Su’A was binned for the incident and put on report. He will sit out one match if he accepts the early guilty plea and could face a two game suspension should be decide to contest the charge at the judiciary.

Emerging Gold Coast winger Treymain Spry has been cleared of any wrongdoing after an off-field incident left him badly injured on the eve of the NRL season.

The 22-year-old, who has played five NRL games, scored twice in their pre-season draw with Brisbane last month as he looked to work his way into coach Justin Holbrook’s top squad.

News Corp reported on Thursday night that Spry suffered a fractured skull, a broken eye socket and bleeding on the brain in the incident in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley a fortnight ago. His immediate playing future is under a cloud and he will need to make a full recovery before he will be cleared to return to the field.

The Gold Coast club issued a statement saying: “As per media reports, the Gold Coast Titans can confirm Treymain Spry is recovering from an off-field incident.

“Treymain has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Queensland Police and the NRL Integrity Unit.

“As the matter is now before the courts, the club will make no further comment at this stage.”

Hynes gets Thurston’s tick of approval

Nicho Hynes has made a strong case to be buy of the year with his form in the first three rounds and legendary halfback Johnathan Thurston admitted he didn’t think the former Melbourne utility would make this much impact as a playmaker at Cronulla.

Hynes was superb in the Sharks’ clinical 36-12 victory over St George Illawarra in Wollongong on Thursday night, scoring a try, landing six goals and setting up a slick attack despite the horrendous handling conditions.

“(Five-eighth) Matty Moylan and Nicho Hynes were on fire, especially Nicho’s kicking game,” Thurston said on Nine commentary.

“To tell the truth, I didn’t actually see this coming from Nicho. I always knew he was a good footballer but to play in the halves, especially halfback, you need to get your team around the park, you need to know when to kick, how to get your team back in the game when you’re behind by points but he’s started on fire.

“This team reminds me of their coach, how he played the game. Just unrelenting, just fit, going hard and non stop.”

Forx League analyst Matty Johns also made the comparison that Cronulla were starting to adopt the character traits of Fitzgibbon from his playing days with the Roosters, NSW and Australia.

While he was full of praise for the Sharks in the wet, Thurston said the home side lacked commitment: “There was just no resolve with the Dragons’ defence.”
