Two meetings to look at on Monday, with my focus at Yarra Valley and Globe Derby. Down below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Yarra Valley

Best bet: Race 3, Number 5, Hephaestus Phoenix

Talented animal that clearly looks the one to beat. He’s raced against He’s A Hammer his past three, a horse that is loaded with talent. Bolted up three back at Kilmore and in two subsequent runs, he has been pretty good. Depth here is nowhere near as strong, should lead and take running down.

Next-best: Race 1, Number 5, Kyvalley Surfrider

He is hit and miss but I do feel his best is good enough to get the job done. Raced last week at Melton when firing off the arm before landing leaders back and battled away pretty well in defeat when second to Uncle Al. Ideally, he finds the front here, but if he has to work, he’s still the one to beat.

Value: Race 5, Number 1, Lenard Ess

Dangerous each-way bet if he can land box seat. He had the sit behind the leader at Maryborough last start and battled away pretty well to finish second to a handy horse in Wingate Guy. I think he’ll get leaders back again and in a winnable race, he’s worth an each-way ticket.

Globe Derby

Best bet: Race 6, Number 4, Atreacherous

Progressive mare that I am confident can make it two from two in SA. First run was around two weeks ago when back before coming three wide and she just had a class edge, winning and winning impressively. I think if she can find the front here, good luck beating her. Keen on her chances.

Next-best: Race 5, Number 7, Mass Destruction

Just has to do everything right and he’ll be beating this lot up. He has contested far stronger races than this in recent times, racing alongside C K Spur, who would be $1.10 in a race like this. Mass Destruction just has to bring good racing manners and he’ll make a mess of these.

Value: Race 1, Number 1, Golden Jaylet

Tricky race to start the meeting so going each way with a horse who should get a charmed run behind the speed. Little unlucky two back, then last start, he drew wide and couldn’t get involved after showing early speed. Hopefully can get leaders back and 1×3 at a price, he’s worth a speck.
