There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with Menangle and Melton getting my attention. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Menangle

Best bet: Race 2, Number 4, Fire Fox
If he runs up to the win two back, it should be a painless watch. It was an electric Australian debut, clocking a 1.49 mile rate. He led here three weeks ago and was disappointing as a short-priced elect. I just can’t get the first-up win out of my mind. He’ll win if he brings that here.

Next best: Race 1, Number 2, Be Major Threat
He hasn’t set the world on fire since arriving from Tasmania but this looks like such an ideal speed map. The Croupier is a brilliant beginner and should lead, with this guy getting his back. This horse did a good job last time out from a wide gate and drawing much better here, he’ll only run well.

Value: Race 5, Number 11, Sunny Gee
He doesn’t quite have the class of some of these but he’s a horse racing in really good form at the moment and maps okay with a safe beginning. This horse ran well in defeat last time out from an awkward draw. This horse is usually reliable from the stand. He’s in with a shout each way.

Melton

Best bet: Race 6, Number 11, Maajida
I’ll bank on class, and this mare has these on toast regarding class. It just depends on where she is at. This horse hasn’t raced since February 19 when down the track in the Robin Dundee at Menangle. She has a tricky draw to contend with but has shown previously she can work in the run and still be effective late. With that in mind, I am confident she wins.

Next best: Race 1, Number 2, Tuppence
Geoff Webster produced a couple of impressive winners on Thursday night at Ballarat, both fresh, so my read is that his stable is in form and he’s getting them ready for a first-up assault. That’s why I like this guy. This horse resumes without a public trial, but the evidence is there to suggest he’s ready to go and has the gate speed to lead. The market will be the ultimate guide, but I am confident his best sees him win.

Value: Race 8, Number 1, Little Yankee
He’s worth a speck each way. This horse just found them a bit sharp two back in the Charlton Trotters Cup. This horse came back in grade last Friday night at Ballarat and battled away well from the pole when second. He draws to get a lovely run in transit and 1×3 at a price, he’s worth a bet.
