Different week, same rain falling everywhere. I hope everyone is well and dry.

Thankfully we got out of jail last week with Heresy in the last. Day 2 of the Championships presents as another ripper, particularly the Queen Elizabeth, with storylines everywhere.

Will Verry Elleegant fire? Can Anamoe stamp himself as a superstar? Does Zaaki handle the wet? And what about Montefilia?

Anyway, there are nine other corkers to wade through. There are a few plays that can leave on us good terms getting the tram back to the city.

Group 1 previews

Race 6: Australian Oaks – 3 Biscayne Bay (one unit at $17)
It is a really good Oaks with a lot of questions about the fillies. Ciaron Maher and James Eustace try to back up from their Derby win last week by repeating the dose, taking Biscayne Bay up from a mile fresh into the big one second-up.

She was good in the Kewney under a hold behind horses, and had a good jump out two weeks ago to get some air in the lungs before the grand final.

A good third from the back in the VRC Oaks means she’ll eat the trip. She’s the one making ground at the end and is worth a dabble at the price.

Race 7: Sydney Cup – 8 No Compromise (one unit at $12)
How good is it having feature Sydney Cups again!

It is a really good race, with lightweight jockeys to the fore thanks to the handicapper’s distancing from The Chosen One up the top. Enter Jay Ford!

No Compromise jumped and was ridden more aggressively than expected last time. It paid dividends and he got the chocolates.

He’s been set for this, and unlike Surefire, who is potentially more progressive, he is a known quantity as a bloke who can handle the going.

Race 8: Queen Elizabeth Stakes – 8 Montefilia (one unit at $6.50)
The headache returned trying to work this one out. I kept coming back to Montefilia as the swimmer in the pack.

Yes Verry Elleegant likes it, Anamoe seems to get through it, but Monte just eats it for breakfast. Her win over Verry Elleegant was full of merit, she’ll peak for this and is the right price.

If Anamoe wins I tip my hat. Verry Elleegant? Uncle Chris Waller is a genius.

Race 9: Queen of the Turf – 1 Colette (two units at $3.90)
I am not dropping off Colette now. I’ve been with her on her non-preferred dry tracks earlier this prep. Dropping back to race other against her own sex on a bog looks perfect.

She won the big mares race in last year’s spring carnival on dry. She gets conditions more in her favour here.

The risk is Icebath, up in weight from last week. I’m risking but wary. Note Colette did tip her out in the Golden Eagle a few years back.
