He’s scored more runs than anyone in Big Bash history but Chris Lynn is now without a team after the Brisbane Heat decided not to offer him a new deal.
Lynn and fellow ‘bash brother’ Brendon McCullum were a marketer’s dream for the Brisbane Heat after the duo wowed audiences with their ultra aggressive batting at the top of the order.
However, Lynn’s form has slowly declined and he scored just 215 runs in the latest edition of the Big Bash at an average of 17.91.
The move to cut ties with Lynn came just a week after the 32-year-old signed with English county side Northamptonshire to play in the English domestic T20 competition, Blast.
That competition doesn’t compete with the Big Bash as it’s in the Australian winter so Lynn will likely be looking for a new BBL side to make the most of his year as he hasn’t played for Australia since 2018.
“Chris Lynn will be missed by thousands, however, the decision we have made as a club is about building on the legacy that he leaves as a foundation player, captain and ambassador for the Heat,” Ian Healy said in a statement.
While Lynn has a little bit of time to weigh up his options his English T20 side is excited to have the big hitting Aussie’s talent coming their way.
“He fits the bill really well in terms of his power at the top of the order,” said Northamptonshire Steelbacks skipper Josh Cobb.
“I really get the feeling he has a hunger to go out there and perform and when he does Wantage Road certainly won’t be big enough.”
“I have always wanted to play county cricket and am really looking forward to linking up with Northamptonshire,” Lynn said.
Northants won the trophy in 2013 and 2016 but have not reached the four-team Finals Day since.
Lynn joins fellow Australians Ben McDermott, Nathan Ellis (both Hampshire Hawks), Ashton Turner (Durham) and Dan Christian (Notts Outlaws) in signing for counties purely to play the T20 Blast. The season starts on May 25.
