Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell has returned from his US trip to get treatment on his troublesome hamstring, targeting a potential return for State of Origin II in Perth at the end of the month.

Mitchell could make an early comeback for Souths in next week’s Round 14 clash with Gold Coast but he said he would wait until speaking with his club before making a call on when he will hit the field again.

The star fullback said he went sightseeing in New York but was “happy to get some training done”.

If he doesn’t suit up against the Titans, his only other chance to impress Blues selectors before the second match would be against the Dragons the following week.

A fit and healthy Harry Grant has arrived in Queensland camp as he prepares to share the hooking duties in Wednesday’s State of Origin opener with good mate Ben Hunt.

The Melbourne star was kept away from the squad until Wednesday night after recovering from flu and managing a groin strain. Grant was recovering from another groin injury in the lead-up to last year’s series-opener and was below his best as the Blues romped to a record 50-6 victory. But he says there are no such concerns this year, with Grant set to feature in an opposed session against Queensland Cup outfit Ipswich Jets at their Gold Coast base on Thursday afternoon.

“It was more precautionary for the others trying not to bring the flu into camp,” Grant said. “Two days at home felt like two weeks … I was champing at the bit to get in here, felt like I was missing out on a lot (but now I’ll be) pretty much straight into it.”

Canterbury are considering a late switch for their Round 13 clash with Penrith with Matt Dufty set to pay the price for the team’s poor form and Josh Addo-Carr or Corey Allan moving to fullback.

Dufty collected one Dally M vote in an improved display in the loss to the Dragons last weekend but has failed to make much of an impact in his first season at the club.

Canterbury forward Tevita Pangai jnr is set to make a return in Round 14 after sitting out two matches with a back injury.

The Cowboys, Panthers, Roosters and Raiders are the four teams suffering the most this weekend as eight other teams put their feet up in the countdown to next Wednesday’s State of Origin series opener.

North Queensland are away to the Titans on Thursday night with the home side only missing captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to Origin duty while the Cowboys have Valentine Holmes, Tom Dearden, Reuben Cotter and Jeremiah Nanai in the Maroons camp. Winger Murray Taulagi and centre Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will be allowed to return to the Cowboys from the Queensland squad.

Titans forward David Fifita was not picked by Queensland but is also out for 2-3 weeks with a recurrence of his knee injury.

Penrith will have six stars sidelined on Friday night when they host the Bulldogs, who have no Origin representatives after Josh Addo-Carr‘s shock omission from the Blues team. Api Koroisau will be allowed to play for the Panthers as he is among the NSW reserves.

Manly will miss Daly Cherry-Evans only for Saturday’s stoush with the Warriors while the Raiders will be without Jack Wighton and Josh Papali’i and James Tedesco, Lindsay Collins and Daniel Tupou won’t be lining up for the Roosters when they meet in Canberra on Sunday. Blues squad member Joseph Suaalii can return to club duty for the visitors.

As of this round, clubs are now required to name a 22-man squad on Tuesday rather than 24 players which applied for the first half of the season.
