Jordan De Goey could miss up to three weeks with an injury sustained during Collingwood training.

The 26-year old’s turbulent season has taken another twist, with scans on Friday revealing the Magpies star had suffered a quad strain, after reporting soreness earlier in the week.

De Goey has since been withdrawn from the Pies’ team to take on North Melbourne this weekend, and is expected to miss further matches, with the club predicting a 2-3 week recovery period.

De Goey enjoyed a strong start to the 2022 season, but struggled on his return to the team against Gold Coast following a break from the club for mental health reasons after his much-publicised trip to Bali during the mid-season break, gathering just 11 possessions.

He has been replaced in the Magpies’ 22 by mid-season recruit Josh Carmichael, with the 22-year old to play his first AFL game.

The West Adelaide product has been in excellent form since making the move from South Australia, averaging 24 disposals in his three VFL matches at the club.

Saints lock in Ratten on two-year extension

St Kilda coach Brett Ratten will be at the helm for at least two more years, after putting pen to paper on a contract extension.

Saints president Andrew Bassat confirmed in a letter to members on Friday morning that Ratten, despite speculation over his future after a poor recent run of form, would be backed in to take the Saints to a first premiership since 1966.

“As the leader of our men’s program, Brett has secured significant buy-in from his fellow coaches, staff and players alike,” Bassat wrote.

“In addition to his strong football IQ, our players appreciate his ability to develop strong relationships, which he uses as a foundation to challenge each individual to get better and to deliver their role for the team.

“This balance, and the ability to unite his coaches, players and staff in a relentless quest for excellence makes Brett the best person to lead us towards our much-longed-for second premiership.”

The presence of Alastair Clarkson on the market had led to suggestions the Saints would sound out the four-time premiership coach to replace his former assistant at the Hawks, Ratten; but following Gold Coast’s decision to back in coach Stuart Dew, the Saints have also committed to sticking fat.

Ratten took over as caretaker coach in 2019 following the departure of Alan Richardson, with a strong end to the season earning him the top job on a permanent basis.

He then steered the Saints to a first finals series since 2011 in the COVID-hit 2020 season, before a poor 2021 season.

However, despite losing three of their last four matches, the Saints are well and truly back in the finals hunt, having defeated premiership contenders Carlton last week. They face Fremantle on Saturday night looking to climb up the ladder from ninth.

COVID-hit Lions to lose star backman amid EIGHT changes

A COVID outbreak at Brisbane looks set to rule out star defender Harris Andrews to face Essendon on Sunday afternoon.

The third-placed Lions have been hit hard by the outbreak as well as a recent poor run with injuries, with the club forced to make multiple changes to the side that defeated the Western Bulldogs last week.

SEN’s Sam Edmund reports that Andrews, the Lions’ vice-captain, will join Keidean Coleman, Daniel McStay and Callum Ah Chee in the AFL’s health and safety protocols.

With captain Dayne Zorko, All Australian defender Daniel Rich and midfielder Jarrod Berry all to miss through injury as well, Andrews’ absence would bring the changes up to eight.

However, the Lions are still expected to defeat the 16th-placed Essendon at the Gabba, which would leave them equal on points with Geelong in first and Melbourne in second on the ladder.
