Ryan Papenhuyzen‘s kneecap was shattered into 10 pieces, according to Melbourne chief executive Justin Rodski, who says the NRL club will now head to the market for a replacement.

Papenhuyzen’s season ended when he was trampled by Canberra’s Jack Wighton on Sunday. He was immediately taken from the field in excruciating pain and has successfully undergone surgery.

Nick Meaney has replaced him at fullback for Saturday’s road clash with Souths with Tyran Wishart coming onto the wing.

The flying fullback joins Xavier Coates, George Jennings and Reimis Smith on Craig Bellamy‘s long-term injury list. “He broke his kneecap in, I think, 10 places so it was a pretty brutal injury,” Rodski told SEN. “His recovery time is somewhere around three months so we won’t see him again this year unfortunately.

“They have put pins and clips that stay inside your knee and it can heal really quickly.”

With such a big list of injuries, Rodski hoped the Storm would be able to bring in an extra body prior to the NRL’s August 1 signing deadline. “We’ll be stretched in terms of our depth,” he said. “We’ve got one more list spot to fill and we are working through our options. “An outside back is key for us moving forward with Papenhuyzen now out.”

The Roosters have been dealt a blow for their Friday night trip to Newcastle with star centre Joey Manu out with a calf injury.

Meanwhile, Manly coach Des Hasler says excitement over superstar Tom Trbojevic’s potential early recovery from shoulder surgery might be misplaced, stressing there’s no timeline on the fullback’s return to action.

It follows reports his season isn’t over as was first expected, with Trbojevic said to be well ahead in his rehabilitation and targeting a return in week two of NRL finals with the intention of pushing on to the World Cup.

“We haven’t really put any timeframes around the recovery … probably what was outlined was more from a medical perspective so there’s still a fair amount of work to be covered off for that,” he told reporters.

“But it’s good to be optimistic, that’s the sort of kid Tommy is, he just loves his footy and is keen to play footy. But I stress, we’ve just got to relax a bit, particularly you journos, there’s really no timeframe.”

Tom’s brother Jake Trbojevic is out of Manly’s team for Friday’s clash with the Dragons after testing positive to the virus. The NSW forward had been taking every measure to avoid getting COVID, earning plenty of ribbing from his teammates. Andrew Davey and Lachlan Croker have also come down with the virus.

Jake Averillo has been ruled out of Canterbury’s contest with Gold Coast on Saturday after also contracting COVID-19 but they have been handed a big boost with star winger Josh Addo-Carr a strong chance to play this weekend after being cleared of serious injury.

Addo-Carr went off in Sunday’s NRL loss to South Sydney with fears he had suffered a glute tear that might have meant he was unable to finish the season.

The Titans, meanwhile, have fullback Jayden Campbell returning on Sunday after being sidelined since round 13 with a hamstring injury.

Another fullback, Reece Walsh, has been dropped to the interchange by interim coach Stacey Jones in a major surprise for the Warriors’ squad to face Canberra on Saturday.

Walsh, who was a member of Queensland’s extended State of Origin squad for game two before he was ineligible for the decider after contracting COVID-19, has lost his fullback spot to Chanel Harris-Tavita with Daejarn Asi to slot in at five-eighth. The rising star recently secured a release to return to the Broncos next year.

Canberra will be without winger Jordan Rapana for the next two games as they gear up for a late push for the NRL finals. The 32-year-old has taken an early guilty plea on his grade two careless high tackle on Melbourne’s Marion Seve in Sunday’s 20-16 win over the Storm.

As well as his ban, Rapana was also hit with a $3000 fine for a separate incident with Seve, a shoulder charge in the 40th minute of the game.

Meanwhile, Storm prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona has accepted a $1800 fine after a careless high tackle on Rapana in the same game.

Cronulla have announced winger Sione Katoa tore a pectoral muscle in Friday’s win over the Cowboys and has undergone surgery which will put him out for at least 12 weeks, meaning he has likely played his last match for the season.

Wests Tigers interim coach Brett Kimmorley will miss Sunday’s game against North Queensland after contracting COVID-19. Kimmorley began a seven-day isolation period after testing positive on Wednesday so won’t travel to Townsville with the team on Saturday morning.
