Panthers star Jarome Luai will be out for six weeks due to the knee injury he suffered last weekend against Cronulla, meaning he will be racing the clock to be right for the start of the finals.

Luai has a high-grade MCL injury and is in a knee brace while the ligament heals before he starts preparing for a return.

Sean O’Sullivan, who deputised for halfback Nathan Cleary during the Origin series, is the replacement in the halves for Luai, starting with Friday’s tussle with Parramatta.

NSW centre Stephen Crichton is also out after suffering a badly lacerated ear when hit in a heavy tackle by Sharks forward Dale Finucane, who was suspended for two games on Tuesday night after being found guilty of dangerous contact at the judiciary. Crichton underwent plastic surgery and will be out until Round 21 or 22.

Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny also injured his knee in the win over the Sharks and will miss a fortnight,

Wests Tigers halfback Luke Brooks looks like he’s played his last game of the year after suffering a calf injury at training.

The experienced playmaker has been ruled out of Saturday night’s trip to Brisbane and the club reports he will miss 5-6 weeks with the injury, meaning he is unlikley to suit up again for the last-placed Tigers.

Jackson Hastings is likely to remain at lock with Jock Madden replacing Brooks in the halves.

Interim coach Brett Kimmorley admits it’s a blow for Brooks but is confident his replacement is ready to fill the void. “Jock has done well for us whenever he’s been called upon this season.”

North Queensland are poised to be handed a massive boost for Sunday’s showdown with St George Illawarra with Reuben Cotter on track to return from a hamstring injury.

The Queensland State of Origin star returned to team training this week, named on an extended bench as the Cowboys aim to keep the top-two spot.

He has got through both of those sessions fine, and will play against the Dragons barring any late mishaps or changes of minds from Cowboys officials.

The match would mark his first since his Origin debut in early June, having hurt his hamstring in warm up in his next game back at the Cowboys.

“His likelihood of playing is good,” Cowboys coach Todd Payten said.  “He moved well in the first two sessions back with the team. Prior to that he was in the rehab group and running on his own.

“We got his volume up in that area, and he’s really moving quick and has been game-specific for the past two days. Fingers crossed he will be right to go.”

Jordan McLean is also out with a hamstring injury but is due to return in coming weeks, while North Queensland’s only other absence are Mitchell Dunn and Heilum Luki with season-ending knee injuries.

Canterbury forward Corey Waddell was rubbed out for five matches after a busy night on Tuesday at the NRL judiciary.

Waddell was referred directly to the panel for allegedly gouging Titans skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui‘s eyes in the Bulldogs’ defeat of Gold Coast. NRL counsel Patrick Knowles said the five-match ban was necessary to send a strong message as a deterrant for such contact.

Canterbury will welcome back fullback Jake Averillo for their trip to Newcastle after a bout of COVID forced him to miss Sunday’s win over the Gold Coast.
