It feels like yesterday we had the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and it’s on again for another event this time in Birmingham, England.
More than 5,000 athletes from 72 Commonwealth nations will compete in Birmingham across 20 sports.
It’s a particularly busy time for track and field competitors – many of whom just competed at the World Championships.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES FULL SCHEDULE
When is the opening ceremony?
The Games officially commence with an opening ceremony which takes place Thursday July 28 local time in Birmingham. According to the official site the ceremony is due to start shortly after 7pm local time which is 4am AEST on Friday July 29 for us in Australia.
How do you watch it?
Interestingly, Channel 7 – the official broadcaster of the Games has their coverage starting at 4:45am AEST – despite the Ceremony starting around 30-45 minutes earlier. It’s unclear whether they’ll join the coverage live or run the ceremony on a partial delay or catch up (editing out some of the pre-show) to combine the ceremony with their breakfast show Sunrise.
Channel 7 is the only way to watch the Commonwealth Games in Australia and you can do so by tuning into Channel 70 in metropolitan areas. If you’re in regional Australia check your local guides for the channel listing.
If you don’t or can’t watch on a standard television you can do so through the 7 plus streaming service but you will need to create a free account.
7 plus can be streamed on mobile devices through the various app stores or simply by accessing the website. It’s also available as an app on most smart TVs.
