Liverpool twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw at promoted Fulham, new signing Darwin Nunez coming off the bench to score one goal and set up another.

Aleksandar Mitrovic put Fulham ahead twice at Craven Cottage on Saturday as Marco Silva’s team threatened a major upset, but Nunez showed just why Liverpool spent so heavily on the Uruguay forward.

Nunez first met a low cross from Mohamed Salah with a deft backheel flick into the top of the net to make it 1-1 in the 64th minute, and then helped his Egyptian teammate net the second equaliser in the 81st.

Nunez tried to control a high cross into the box but the ball fell into the path of Salah, who had a simple tap-in.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson came close to an injury-time winner when his curling long-distance shot hit the crossbar.

Mitrovic headed in the opening goal in the first half, rising highest at the far post to meet a cross from the right. He also converted a penalty after he was brought down by Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham reacted superbly to going behind at home to an early James Ward-Prowse goal against Southampton and raced to a 4-1 victory.

Ryan Sessegnon and Eric Dier put Spurs in front by halftime and Southampton defender Mohammed Salibu netted a comical own goal when trying to clear the ball off the line in the 61st minute.

Dejan Kulusevski capped a stellar performance by slotting in the fourth two minutes later.

Newcastle beat newcomers Nottingham Forest 2-0 after Fabian Schar finally broke the deadlock with a shot into the top corner from just outside the area in the 58th minute. Callum Wilson added the second.

There was a distinct American flavour to Leeds United’s 2-1 home win over Wolverhampton.

US international Brenden Aaronson played a key part in the winning goal as he rushed in to meet a cross from Patrick Bamford, although it was credited as an own goal by defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Aaronson and fellow US international Tyler Adams made their first start for Leeds, managed by American coach Jesse Marsch. Daniel Podence had given Wolves the lead in the sixth minute.

Promoted Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 2-0 thanks to goals from Jefferson Lerma and Kieffer Moore.

A first-half penalty from Italy midfielder Jorginho was enough to earn Chelsea a 1-0 win at Everton in the evening kick off.

Chelsea peppered the home goal with 13 corners in the first half and broke the deadlock when Jorginho converted from the spot after Ben Chilwell has been fouled.

A brilliant save from Edouard Mendy denied Abdoulaye Doucoure early in the second half but that was as good as it got for a disappointing Everton side.
