Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is through to the quarter-finals at the US Open, and faces Russian Karen Khachanov for a place in the last four at Flushing Meadows for the very first time.

The 27-year-old is now the outright favourite to claim the title at Flushing Meadows, having enjoyed a career-best 2022 and made his first grand slam final at Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic, who won’t be in attendance due to the tournament requiring mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations.

Kyrgios knocked out world number one and reigning champion Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals, and with Rafael Nadal defeated in the fourth round by American Frances Tiafoe, the Australian’s odds are shortening by the day.

Meanwhile, fellow Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic is also into the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the first time in her career.

Having sent Serena Williams into retirement in the third round, the giant-killer then secured a straight-sets victory over Ludmilla Samsonova to make it to the last eight for the second consecutive slam, having done likewise at Wimbledon a few months ago.

She will face fifth seed Ons Jabeur for a first-ever grand slam semi-final berth.

What time are Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic playing?
Kyrgios will play Khachanov on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main court in New York, on Monday morning (AEST). All matches for the remainder of the tournament will be played on this court.

While the start time, as for all tennis matches, is not set in stone, Kyrgios is slated to be the second match of the evening session, at a time no earlier than 10:15am (AEST).

That means if you’re in South Australia or the Northern Territory, the Aussie is slated to start at 9:45am, while for Western Australians, it’s 8:15am.

Please note again that this is an earliest start time only, meaning the match could be pushed back depending on the result of Coco Gauff’s clash with Caroline Garcia in the previous match.

Secondary evening matches at the US Open tend to start later than scheduled, so expect Kyrgios to begin any time between 10:30am and 12pm.

You’ll likely have to burn the midnight oil to catch Ajla Tomljanovic in action, however, with the Aussie women’s number one facing Jabeur at 4am (AEST).

That’s 3:30am for SA and NT viewers, and 2am over in WA.

Tomljanovic is the second match on court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but is scheduled for four hours later than Matteo Berrettini’s clash with Caspar Ruud, so it’s far likelier that her match will start on time.

How to watch Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic play

For the first time, Fox Sports and ESPN will not be showing the US Open – so a Foxtel or Kayo Sports subscription won’t allow you to tune into Kyrgios’ game.

The rights have been bought by Channel 9 and Stan Sport, who also own the rights to the three other grand slams.

Channel 9 will be broadcasting select matches throughout the tournament live and free on their second channel 9GEM (channel 92 in metro areas). Like at Wimbledon, Kyrgios’ matches from here on out are certain to be featured prominently, as will Tomljanovic.

For other matches, or if you’d prefer to watch the match on a live stream, you have two options: the free 9Now service or the paid subscription service Stan Sport, which is ad-free.

9Now will allow you to watch only matches broadcast on free-to-air TV live as they happen, while a Stan Sport subscription will enable you to watch any match of your choosing live throughout the US Open, with full replays and highlights packages also available.

For instance, if you want to watch Tomljanovic’s match but wake up at a reasonable hour, Stan Sport will allow you to head to the relevant match and watch it ad- and spoiler-free as if it were live.

You can get a 7-day free trial with Stan Sport before you are charged a monthly minimum depending on which package you want.
