The tennis world and big names from all walks of life throughout the planet itself have taken to social media to praise Roger Federer for his outstanding, record-breaking achievements.

Federer, who has finally announced his retirement, has received well-deserved accolades from current and former rivals, for his deeds on and off the court.

His idol, Australian icon Rod Laver also toasted Federer’s career by posting on Twitter a simple: “Thank you for everything.”

Women’s legend Serena Williams, who recently made an emotional farewell at the US Open, posted on Instagram: “I wanted to find the perfect way to say this, as you so eloquently put this game to rest – perfectly done, just like your career. I have always looked up to you and admired you. Our paths were always so similar, so much the same.

“You inspired countless millions and millions of people – including me – and we will never forget. I applaud you and look forward to all you do in the future. Welcome to the retirement club. And thank you for being you.”

Football’s biggest name, Lionel Messi, posted on Instagram: “A genius, unique in the history of tennis and an example for any athlete. All the best in your new stage, we will miss seeing you on the court, making us enjoy.”

His greatest rival, Rafael Nadal said it was a sad day but that it had been an “honour and a privilege to share all these years with you.”
