Moonee Valley – Race 9 – W.S. Cox Plate – Group 1 – 2040m – $5,000,000 – Good 4
What a super edition of the weight for age championship of Australasia. Majority of the field are coming out of the Might and Power Stakes at Caulfield, arguably the most exciting Group 1 of the spring to date.
Zaaki has drawn barrier 1 which will allow Jamie Kah every chance to live out her childhood dream of winning The Cox Plate. Zaaki showed plenty of fight at Caulfield and looked the winner several times before being grabbed in the shadows.
Sticking to the 2000m is a positive and I expect a peak run here. If The Valley is ”leaderish” Zaaki will look the winner in the straight. When will Kah press the button? Big Chance, especially if the predicted rain lobs and ruins my hair.
No knock on Anamoe after a brilliant last bound win at Caulfield. He wobbled around the home straight like a long lost shopping trolley but still got the job done. Scary part about Anamoe it was his first run back after a slight lameness issue.
Any improvement as a result of that run makes him incredibly hard to beat. I think he is the best horse in the country at present and he has this race at his mercy. Barrier 4 should allow James McDonald to find a comfortable spot in transit before rounding them up late.
Not sure the opposition have progression or improvement left in them, while scarily I think Anamoe can go to new heights. Chips In.
I’m Thunderstruck can run well again here. Not sure The Valley is his best track and barrier 10 doesn’t leave Mark Zahra many options. Traditionally he does storm home from the tail, however I don’t think you want to be giving Zaaki, Anamoe, and company a head start, especially if it’s on a day where runners are struggling to make ground from the back.
Gold Trip can run well after a great Caulfield performance, while Young Werther will be producing a ”Cup Trial” hitting the line late.
Suggestion: 10. Anamoe
