Wallabies DIY player ratings from win over Scotland: Frost fires, Foley divides opinion

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies’ thrilling win over Scotland didn’t exactly blow your minds, if the DIY player ratings results are any guide – with one notable exception.

Just one Australian made it past a 7 average – Nick Frost. Clearly you are all of a mind with our resident rugby guru Jim Tucker, who couldn’t have given the man mountain higher praise.

However, few other Wallabies joined him in a higher rating – not even adjudged player of the match James Slipper, with the captain peaking at 6.98, though still enough for second-best.

At the other end of the scale, Bernard Foley’s (4.51) questionable kicking game on Sunday morning saw him rated as the second-lowest Wallaby, ahead of only fullback Tom Banks (4.39).

Interestingly, though, Foley’s ratings were as mixed as we’ve seen in quite some time: a significant portion of you voters (8.7% to be exact) gave him a 7, while 6 (20%), 5 (20.9%), 4 (22.6%) and even 3 (14.8%) all got a decent chunk of scores as well.

If only those ratings were objective right? People mostly rate for something flashy or something stupid. They don’t notice a lot of dirty work

But 13 is reserved..

Backlines rarely function outside Foley. His kicking game is and always has been poor and the back three are knackered by defensive musical chairs. He should haven dropped forever after the time wasn’t debacle. Arrogant behaviour. Stepping up to take line kicks when your a 35 metre kicker is as well.

People seem to rate on visible or high profile impact. This was a tight game and a few players here are seriously underappreciated in these numbers. Anyone who's played the game knows there are scrappers and there are expanders and the game follows that course.

Or make a tackle. White was outstanding when he came on. People score bench guys wrong

According to ESPN stats Gleeson made 0 tackles and 0 runs.

As far as I’ve seen there is zero evidence on here that Gleeson has any group of posters, Qlders or others, hating on him. Maybe it’s purely a reflection that in his short time on the field he never really got a chance to shine. No shame in that. He’s an impressive young player - no need for us to overhype him every time he takes the field.

I thought he was a bit better in attack then just the kicks. He has a habit of getting his body through tackles and has good leg drive which creates fast ruck ball. He was one of the few creating quick, clean ball while Tate was on. He died with it if nothing else was on and they needed a straightener. Yes real shame that he won that jackal but then back chatted. Either he said something bad or he was the straw that broke the camels back and it was more of a team penalty. I'd like to see a lineup of white, lolesio, hunter, ikitau as this combo was finding some rhythm earlier this season.

Paisami definitely a stronger 13 than 12. But that means he has to get past Ikitau who continues to be a rock in that backline.

He faired Better than Gleeson. I expect he’s getting 1’s from QLD not because of how he plays, but purely because his name isn’t Harry Wilson.

I saw HP's contribution in this test as rocks & diamonds with slightly more rocks. I was surprised with his 4.73. He often died with the ball & continues to lose possession in contact. Twice penalised. Very lucky not to be yellow carded & reduce the team to 14. His tactical kicking is quality, his defense good to awesome & he has some gas. IMO HP's skills are more productive at 13.

Personally I think it was Tate who "dished" awful balls.

His forwards dished up awful ball off the deck and were completely dominated in the rucks. I don’t think any halfback wouldn’t have struggled with their service in that situation

Unfortunately it is always the case that some players are liked and can do nothing wrong others are not liked and can nothing right. There is little honesty in player reviews. I can remember back when people bagged Campese, Latham and others just as good. They are all very talented players. Far better than I ever was and most of their critics were. Be fair.

On rewatch I thought hunter wasn't as poor as many suggest here (not saying he had a blinder either). Next to Tate and white he was the only back that really created much of anything with two well weighted kicks that were near tries, a few 2nd man plays one of which led to the try, and some gainline carries. He is also starting to regularly contest at the ruck and get a turnover or two which is good, he just needs to make sure his tackles stick, he bounces out of them alot.

Tate getting a 6 is more telling on his supporters than on the bloke. Max of 4 is reasonable and he will probably pay the price this week.

Banks again showed very little to be retained as a starter. I just see him as a player with very little game awareness and so despite his obvious speed I think he doesn't offer much. I would far prefer Hodge as starting fullback with Jock on the bench.

Tom Wright's is an interesting score. 4.65 after getting 5 from 41% of voters suggests a whole lot of 1s and 2s. 5 runs for 32m 1 offload 1 defender beaten, no missed tackles, no handling errors, gave away no penalties. Not a MOTM night but also not a single mistake?

Has to be White and Noah with Donaldson as reserve and Frost and Skelton. It is time to get combinations. Hodge or Campbell at fullback. Renoe get some momentum going.

I hope Jock keeps his bench spot this week, then starts against Italy and Wales. He needs gametime and I can't see Banks being one of the 3 giteau law picks for RWC given Kerevi and MK are so far ahead of the second best in their positions it's not funny then one of QC, Arnold and possibly Skelton depending on injuries takes the third spot. Jock will almost definitely get an RWC spot and needs time with the team on the pitch. He should have played almost every test this year IMO.
