Manchester United missed a chance to go level on points with rivals Man City, but rescued a point in a thrilling game with Leeds at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho scored in a 2-2 draw after managerless Leeds led 2-0 after 48 minutes. Leeds held on for the point in the face of waves of Man United attack in the closing stages.

The hosts were in big trouble when Raphael Varane turned Crysencio Summerville’s cut-back into his own net to put Leeds two ahead after Wilfried Gnonto had given them a first-minute lead with a stunning long range shot.

Rashford halved the deficit when he headed home Diogo Dalot’s cross before Sancho, who recently returned to the squad after recovering from physical and mental issues, scored his first Premier League goal since September, driving his shot home from 10 metres.

The result left Leeds a point clear of the relegation zone and above West Ham into 16th, and the teams face off again at the weekend.

Man United moved to 43 points from 22 games – seven behind leaders Arsenal (20 games) and two behind Man City (21 games).

Meanwhile, Marco Silva has watched Fulham secure an FA Cup fifth-round clash with Leeds United from the comfort of the stands as Sunderland’s hopes of a 1973 reunion went up in smoke.

Harry Wilson’s early strike and second-half goals from substitute Andreas Pereira and Layvin Kurzawa earned the Londoners a 3-2 fourth-round replay victory at the Stadium of Light, when their manager was forced to take a seat among a crowd of 29,651 as he served a touchline ban.

Their reward is a home clash with Leeds, who parted company with head coach Jesse Marsch on Monday.

For Championship side Sunderland, who dragged themselves back into it at 2-1 courtesy of Jack Clarke’s curled effort and 3-2 through substitute Jewison Bennette, the dream of a reunion with the club they famously beat in the 1973 final evaporated despite a concerted fightback.

“It’s (his goal) been a long time coming. Since my injury at the start of the season I haven’t hit the form I’ve wanted to. I’m hoping a few more follow now,” Wilson told the BBC.

“We’re in a fantastic position in the league and the cup is giving a chance to lads who maybe aren’t playing as many minutes in the league and so far they’ve taken it.

“We know a tough game against Leeds is going to follow.”

Tony Mowbray’s side fell behind with eight minutes gone when Carlos Vinicius did well to hold off his marker and lay the ball back to Wilson, who stabbed into the bottom corner with the outside of his left foot.

Wilson might have doubled his tally with 25 minutes gone after picking off Patrick Roberts’ ill-judged cross-field pass to Aji Alese and racing in on goal, although goalkeeper Anthony Patterson easily claimed his weak attempt, and the Wales international narrowly missed the target after being played in by Tom Cairney minutes later.

The home side forced their way into the game in the latter stages of the half with Clarke seeing a deflected effort hacked away before Amad Diallo’s dipping thunderbolt caused goalkeeper Marek Rodak all kinds of problems.

The Black Cats’ Dan Neil curled one just past the post from the edge of the box before Rodak had to turn away Roberts’ strike, and it took a goal-line clearance by Shane Duffy to deny Amad a 57th-minute equaliser.

However they fell further behind within two minutes when substitutes Aleksandar Mitrovic and Pereira combined, with the latter firing home from close range.

Clarke gave the hosts hope when he dispatched a curling 77th-minute shot into Rodak’s top corner, but Kurzawa restored the visitors’ two-goal advantage within five minutes and although substitute Bennette reduced the deficit once again as the game entered added time, there was no way back.
