The Dolphins have been forced to make a late change after their captain’s run at Suncorp Stadium leading into their historic first NRL match against the Roosters on Sunday.

Bench forward Herman Ese’ese will miss the game with a pectoral injury which is expected to keep him out of action for four weeks. His place on the bench has been taken by Connelly Lemuelu.

The biggest selection bombshell in the Round 1 team announcements was the Dolphins picking 19-year-old playmaker Isaiya Katoa for his NRL debut with key recruit Anthony Milford dumped.

Katoa will start at five-eighth alongside half Sean O’Sullivan for the history-making clash.

Coach Wayne Bennett never dropped the 28-year-old in four seasons at the Broncos where he was one of his favourite players but has axed the 206-game veteran who played in the World Cup final for Samoa.

Joey Manu is out for the Roosters four weeks after being left with a dent in his face from an accidental elbow. After rushing in to make a tackle on teammate Junior Pauga, he immediately left the field and has undergone surgery to fix the bone.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (back) is also out and are without Billy Smith (knee) and Sitili Tupouniua (knee) longer term but the Roosters welcome back Luke Keary (jaw) for the Dolphins clash. Angus Crichton has stepped away from rugby league while dealing with bipolar disorder, with no timeline set for his return to the NRL.

The hard-luck stories leading into Round 1 have been Titans second-rower Beau Fermor, who tore his ACL at training, and Canterbury forward Luke Thompson, who suffered a broken ankle injury during a tackling drill and may also miss the season.

The 24-year-old Fermor is set to miss the rest of the year after scans confirmed the injury. The Dalby-born forward was one of the Titans’ best players last year,  crossing over 11 times in 23 games to be their leading try scorer.

The latest setback is the second time he has suffered a serious knee injury after rupturing an ACL in 2019 when he was on the cusp of making his NRL debut for Newcastle. His form last year merited selection in Queensland’s State of Origin extended squad.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook told AAP that Fermor’s latest setback was “really disappointing news for Beau and us”, but backed him to get back to his best. “He’ll be fine. Unfortunately he has already been through this process before and knows what’s in front of him,” Holbrook said.

The Titans face fellow potential strugglers the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Scans showed Thompson had two breaks in his ankle. He’ll see a specialist on Wednesday, but Bulldogs football boss Phil Gould confirmed he would be facing a significant stint on the sidelines.

“Unfortunately Luke Thompson’s injury is quite serious. Prognosis is for minimum 6 months recovery. Possibly longer depending on surgery type. Very sad for Luke and the club. Thunderbolts happen.”

Sharks star Nicho Hynes won’t play in Cronulla’s NRL season opener. Hynes will miss the clash with South Sydney at PointsBet Stadium on Saturday night after straining a calf muscle in training last week with Braydon Trindall to partner Matt Moylan in the halves.

The same injury has ruled Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak out of Friday’s tussle with the Knights in Wellington. Newcastle recruit Adam Elliott has been cleared to play in the opening round after overcoming a hip injury suffered in last year’s NRL finals.

Josh Papali’i (calf) will not suit up in Canberra’s NRL season opener against North Queensland in Townsville. The injury hasn’t responded to treatment and the Queensland State of Origin prop should be right for round two.

Dean Ieremia added to the body count in the trial win over the Warriors when he tore his ACL and won’t play again this year while prop Tui Kamikamica will be out until Round 6 due to a tendon injury in his foot.

Debutant winger Will Warbrick and second-rower Trent Loiero have been elevated to the starting side.

Kalyn Ponga made his return from concussions in the recent trial with Parra at five-eighth. Lachlan Miller has been brought in to shore up the fullback spot.

The Saifiti twins are the starting props with David Klemmer gone with new recruits Jack Hetherington and Adam Elliott starting off as bench options for the middle-forward rotation with Kurt Mann at lock.

Newcastle centre Dane Gagai (hamstring) is out with Enari Tuala recovering from a pectoral injury to take his place. Former Titans winger Greg Marzhew was omitted due to a minor hip issue.

Scott Sorensen and Mitch Kenny are readymade replacements for Viliame Kikau (Bulldogs) and Api Koroisau (Tigers) but lack the same game-breaking oomph.

Dylan Edwards (hamstring), Sorensen and Liam Martin (knee) were rested from the World Cup Challenge with minor injuries but are all but certain to be right for Round 1.

Broncos: 1. Selwyn Cobbo 2. Corey Oates 3. Kotoni Staggs 4. Herbie Farnworth 5. Jesse Arthars 6. Ezra Mam 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Corey Jensen 9. Billy Walters 10. Payne Haas 11. Kurt Capewell 12. Reece Walsh’s fractured eye socket suffered in the pre-season has ruled him out with Selwyn Cobbo switching to fullback after he played there in the second week of the trials. Jesse Arthars has been elevated onto the wing.

The pack has been weakened for depth a little in the off-season and Kobe Hetherington suffering a torn pectoral at training recently is a body blow. He was one of the Broncos’ most consistent performers last season. Veteran prop Martin Taupau will make his Broncos debut off the bench.

Second-rower TC Robati has been sacked due to a string of off-field incidents.

Morgan Harper 22. Gordon Chan Kum Tong

With Morgan Harper out with a shoulder injury, Tolu Koula was impressive in the trials at centre so he will start there with Reuben Garrick on the flank.

Josh Schuster has been ruled out of the season opener with a calf injury so Cooper Johns gets the nod at five-eighth ahead of Kaeo Weekes.

Tom Trbojevic suffered a hamstring injury suffered in the off-season but the star fullback is a certain starter.

Jason Saab being out until midway through the season with a knee injury means Christian Tuipulotu will get a sustained chance to build on last year’s efforts. Karl Lawton is also missing the start of the season with a knee problem.

Trey Mooney 22. Peter Hola

Xavier Savage being out with a broken jaw means Ricky Stuart will play Seb Kris at fullback with Jordan Rapana on the wing after he avoided suspension for a high tackle in the trial loss against the Tigers by paying a $3000 fine.

Star Raiders prop Josh Papali’i is also absent with a calf complaint.

Zac Woolford cemented the starting hooker’s spot mid-season with Tom Starling reverting to his bench role and Ricky Stuart now has another option with Danny Levi at the club. Levi was one of their best performers in the trials and has been given the assignment for Round 1 with Starling on the bench and Woolford among the reserves.

Tom Burgess has replaced Dolphins signing Mark Nicholls as a starting prop while coach Jason Demetriou has been singing Blake Taaffe’s praises as a bench utility with Kodi Nikorima, another Redcliffe recruit, no longer around.

Bench utility Connor Watson will miss a large chunk of the season after suffering a patella tendon injury at training. Brandon Smith will get first crack at hooker and with Watson out, Drew Hutchison will be his back-up off the bench.

Angus Crichton has stepped away from rugby league while dealing with bipolar disorder, with no timeline set for his return to the NRL. Crichton’s father confirmed that the 27-year-old NSW State of Origin second-rower was receiving treatment for the condition and was being fully supported. He is expected to miss at least the first two rounds of the season.

Fellow second-rower Sitili Tupouniua is rehabbing a knee injury so Nat Butcher steps into the run-on team alongside his brother Egan.

John Bateman will be held back due to his late start to pre-season training while winger Ken Maumalo is missing out due to a knee injury. Charlies Staines makes his club debut on the wing for Maumalo.

Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks and hooker Api Koroisau have shaken off calf complaints.

Shawn Blore will start in the back-row alongside new signing Isaiah Papali’i.

Titans: 1. AJ Brimson 2. Alofiana Khan-Pereira 3. Aaron Schoupp 4. Phillip Sami 5. Jojo Fifita 6. Kieran Foran 7. Tanah Boyd 8. Jaimin Jolliffe 9. Sam Verrills 10. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui 11. The Titans have suffered a massive blow on the eve of the season with star back-rower Beau Fermor rupturing an ACL. Fermor, who was one of their standouts in a poor 2022, will undergo a lengthy rehabilitation period and miss the rest of the year.

Joe Stimson is likely to come into the starting side with Sam McIntyre the frontrunner to get a call-up to the interchange.

Coach Justin Holbrook is starting Kieran Foran in the halves alongside Tanah Boyd with AJ Brimson at fullback so young guns Toby Sexton and Jayden Campbell will have to work their way back into the NRL side. Campbell is on the interchange.

Their pack is very strong on paper but unfortunately their defence was paper thin too often last season.

Aaron Schoupp will start at centre with Patrick Herbert out with a knee injury and Brian Kelly suspended at the start of the season due to a spear tackle ban carrying over. Phil Sami moves in from the wing with Alofiana Khan-Pereira to make his NRL debut after running in four tries in the trial win over the Dolphins.

Cody Ramsey won’t be back until next year due to his intestinal problem so Tyrell Sloan should get another chance to lock down the fullback role.

Jayden Sullivan has won the race for the St George Illawarra No.6 jersey with Jack Bird confirming he will start the season at lock.

Incumbent Tyrell Amone was set to start the season at No.6, before he was charged with assault and stood down under the NRL’s no-fault policy.
