The 2022 AFL Brownlow Medal promises to be another close count, with no less than six stars of the game in line for the most prestigious of awards. Join The Roar for round-by-round updates and every vote from 7pm (AEST).
The typical Brownlow medal races of the last decade or so have been almost forgone conclusions by the time the ceremony actually took place, with last year’s close run affair an entertaining abnormality that saw Ollie Wines take home the coveted ‘Charlie’. T
his year promises to follow in suit and be a tight race between this year’s two favourites – Lion Lachie Neale, and Demon Clayton Oliver.
Neale, an All-Australian once more in 2022, is the slim favourite over fellow member of the year’s best 22 Oliver to add to add a second Brownlow Medal to his collection of accolades.
Four dark horse contenders are also in the race looking to steal ‘Charlie’ away from both the frontrunners: Patrick Cripps of Carlton, the Dockers’ Andrew Brayshaw, another Demon in Christian Petracca, and the Suns’ co-captain Touk Miller.
While each of these men enjoyed great seasons, with exceptional statistics and exceptional influence on the game, for a plethora of reasons – whether it be injury, team performance, or teammate performance – their odds of winning the Brownlow are lower than the two favourites. But don’t be too quick to write them off: the 2022 Brownlow is shaping up to be such a tight race, all outcomes are squarely still on the table.
Tonight is not only about the Brownlow, we also crown the 2022 Mark of the Year, and 2022 Goal of the Year. Mark of the Year this year has thre extremely worthy finalists – Mitch Georgiades of Port Adelaide, Charlie Spargo of Melbourne, and Toby Greene of GWS.
All 3 are spectacular marks that are unique in their own way which should make for an interesting result.
Goal of the Year is also going to be a hotly contested affair with the three finalists being Josh Daicos of Collingwood, Sam Draper of Essendon, and Shai Bolton of Richmond.
We saw some special goals in nearly every round this year, so to be finalists alone this year is quite a feat.
Prediction
Lachie Neale should be able to gather enough votes early on free of any of his teammates taking too many votes away from him, and maintain a lead over the rest of the pack. Clayton Oliver’s chances will just be too hampered by his teammates like Viney, Petracca, Angus Brayshaw, and Max Gawn all having had games where they were best on ground to keep polling at the rate of Lachie Neale.
Andrew Brayshaw also is not to be counted out, and may well be able to challenge Neale.
Josh Daicos’ effort should be enough to net him Goal of the Year. For Mark of the Year I think it’s going to come down to something intrinsic about the mark that separates it from the others, and for that I’ll take Charlie Spargo for having the courage to jump for his grab while running back into 50.
