Two teams. One chance at glory. The stage is set for Adelaide and Melbourne to do battle for the premiership in the 2022 AFLW grand final. Join The Roar for rolling coverage from 12:30pm (AEST).
When two teams enter a decider having only lost one game respectively across the entire season, it is fair to expect a cracking affair.
Adelaide and Melbourne have been the cream of the crop throughout the home and away season and ground their way through two tough preliminary finals to earn a spot in today’s grand final.
The Crows have players and staff who have lived this journey in previous years, as the most successful AFLW team in history, and they will show little fear or apprehension in attempting to claim the club its third title. Melbourne has similarly been a dominant force in recent times, yet always a step or two short of ultimate success in spite of an impressive and competitive list.
Much has been made of the symbolic significance of the Erin Phillips vs Daisy Pearce storyline that envelops this match, with both pioneers of the women’s game. Their paths will rarely cross in this match, yet the winner will add another chapter to their legacy and stand as a long-term example to the thousands of women that will follow them in the AFLW for years to come.
Tactically, the match will be played out as a battle between the best defence in the competition and the most potent attack. The Crows stifled the Demons when the teams last met during the home and away season and will look to flood the corridor and deny the Demons access to it with their short kick and hand pass game.
Melbourne may well be forced to head east and west to penetrate and create goal scoring opportunities. Should the Crows subsequently dominate stoppage and contest, the Dees will be up for a challenging afternoon.
Prediction
The 2022 AFLW Grand Final stands to be a classic battle of contrasting styles and history says that the defensive prowess of the Crows should prove the deciding factor up against the attacking weapons possessed by the Demons.
