The AFL season is over, but it’s not the end of the road for footy fans, with the 2021 trade period beginning today. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).

We’ve already seen a trio of players shift clubs to begin the free agency period. Adelaide defender Jake Kelly and Richmond ruckman Mabior Chol got the ball rolling last Friday, heading to Essendon and Gold Coast respectively. Over the weekend, Sydney elected not to match Carlton’s bid for tough midfielder George Hewett, who joins the Blues as a restricted free agent.

Unlike last year’s explosive trade period, this year’s affair promises to be quieter, with most of the AFL’s biggest names locked away and few looking overly likely to change clubs. The biggest name on the market remains wantaway Docker Adam Cerra, whose desire to also head to the Blues could be the catalyst for a number of other trades to be made around it.

Fremantle are after more than Carlton’s pick six for the young midfielder, but thus far the Blues are holding firm.

Elsewhere, Port Adelaide ruckman Peter Ladhams appears to be on the outer, but the club maintains a rival will have to pay up for them to release the contracted big man. A similar story is playing out at GWS with out of form captain Stephen Coniglio; the Giants maintain he is a required player, but rumours have circulated that both club and player are keen for a fresh start.

Hawthorn are also set to be a major player this year, with Sam Mitchell reportedly open to a list clearout to stamp his mark on his new team. Tom Mitchell, Chad Wingard, Jack Gunston and Jaeger O’Meara are among the senior Hawks that will dominate discussion over the coming weeks – will one or more of them exchange brown and gold for a new set of colours?

Join The Roar for a live blog of all the latest news throughout the trade and free agency period, starting from 9am (AEDT).
