Though we only saw a small number of deals done yesterday, there were some big pieces of news to come out of it which will set the scene for a dramatic finish to the trade period.

Firstly, Grant Birchall move to Brisbane as an unrestricted free agent. He will be the last free agent through the door, as the window closed yesterday.

The means players like Sam Jacobs and Jack Newnes, who might have moved through free agency, will now need to find another way to get to new clubs.

Jacobs is likely to be traded to GWS, as the Giants knew that signing him as a free agent could decrease the value of the compensation pick they received for losing Adam Tomlinson.

Newnes on the other hand faces an uncertain future, with rival clubs showing a lack of interest.

We also learned yesterday that, despite rumour, Essendon’s Orazio Fantasia and Adelaide’s Brad Crouch will both remain with their present clubs into 2020.

Fantasia’s news in particular was something of a surprise as most had expected him to seek a trade after picking a new South Australian manager.

However the big bombshell of Thursday came in two parts.

Firstly, it was revealed that Fremantle had demanded not just pick 6 this year but also a 2020 future first-round pick as the price to get Brad Hill to St Kilda.

Secondly, the Saints returned serve to this demand by trading out pick 6 to the GWS Giants for picks 12 and 18, passing on pick 59 to GWS as well.

A gutsy move that is certain to have massive ramifications for how the rest of the trade period pans out.
