There is a sense of normalcy around the Brisbane Lions’ clash with the GWS Giants at the Gabba, as the COVID-19 pandemic makes its presence felt on the Victorian clubs. Tune into Saturday afternoon footy here on The Roar with live scores from 2:10pm (AEST).

For the first time in Round 11, fans will be present for this match, as one of the few games for the round not impacted by the Victorian COVID outbreak.

This should be one of the matches of the round, as the red-hot Lions test their mettle against the fast-improving Giants. Having won five of their last seven matches, with the only defeats being narrowly to Richmond and to the ladder-leading Western Bulldogs, Leon Cameron’s team have given themselves a real crack at returning to finals action.

Last week’s home win over the West Coast Eagles was arguably their most impressive yet, the Giants coping brilliantly with the absence of the talismanic Toby Greene. With the acting captain out, it was another Green(e) who stepped up, with second-year midfield bull Tom continuing to show why he’s a star on the rise. His midfield tussle with the likes of Jarryd Lyons and Dayne Zorko will be fascinating.

The Lions, too, made a statement with a 28-point win over reigning premiers Richmond on Friday night. Despite being without Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, the Lions have found vintage touch in recent weeks, and head into this match having won six in a row.

Midfielder Rhys Mathieson made plenty of headlines against the Tigers with his aggression and intensity, involved in stoushes aplenty with the opposition. Time will tell whether the Giants have a plan to respond to his niggling tactics.

The Lions will be unchanged for this match, while the Giants lose important defender Sam Taylor with an ankle injury.
