The Brisbane Lions come into this home contest off the back of last weekend’s heartbreaking after the siren loss to Fremantle.

Adding to the emotional let-down of that result is then the significant travel in getting back to the east coast of Australia.

Tonight’s game is a big test for the Lions, coming up against an opponent who until last year has historically had the wood over them.

Even more for the Lions is that they are on the cusp of achieving something special this year, as it appears the last few years of re-build are starting to show some good signs.

Brisbane have some interesting ins this week with the inclusion of Ben Keays, Nick Robertson, Rhys Mathieson, Archie Smith, who come in for players injured, ommitted, and curiously, managed.

As for Hawthorn, Jack Gunston made a curious statement after last week’s win over Port, when he said he just wanted to play again, because the Hawks are yet to win back to back games this season.

It is hard to get a proper read on Hawthorn this year.

They looked like world beaters in Round 1, but then they looked tired and easily overrun in Round 2.

They will stumble against opponents where they are favoured, like the Demons game, but then they will come out and blow the more fancied opponents off the park, like the Giants game.

That is why this weekend poses a danger game for Brisbane at home, coming up against a team that is just dying to get back to back wins on the board.

For the Hawks, Isaac Smith and Mitchell Lewis come into the side.

The added element of Luke Hodge and Chris Fagan coming up against their old jaunt, and those two wins over Hawthorn last season fresh in coach Alistair Clarkson’s mind, makes this an all the more fascinating contest.

Prediction
Lions at home and in good form should get the job done for a third win in a row against the Hawks.

Lions by 20.
